Women's swimming & diving victorious over Gordon

BANGOR, Maine - Husson University women's swimming & diving team defeated Gordon College on Saturday afternoon inside Webber Pool. The Eagles won 168-105 over the Fighting Scots and won 12 out of the 16 events.

Husson opened the day with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, behind a time of 2:09.33 from junior Grace Rocheleau, junior Erin Madden, graduate student Hannah Soutter and junior Rachel Hand.

Senior Kayla Payson captured the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:54.17 before Hand won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.97.

Freshman Mia Winslow narrowly edged out teammate Rocheleau with a time of 1:11.22 to the win the 100-yard backstroke. Rocheleau finished the event in 1:12.47.

Gordon matched Husson by winning the next two individual events. Senior Katherine Maloney took the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:18.75 and junior Gina Ouellete won the 200-yard butterfly to cut the Husson advantage in the team standings to ten points, 55-45. Maloney also captured the 500-yard freestyle later in the meet with a time of 5:57.26.

The Eagles earned victories in the next five events to jump out to a 112-73 advantage in the team standings. Payson took the 50-yard freestyle in 27:17. Sophomore Riley Mahoney won the five-dive one-meter optionals with 155.20 points. Hand picked up a second victory with a time of 57.33 in the 100-yard freestyle. Winslow notched another victory by winning the 200-yard backstroke and Madden paced the field in 2:54.50 to win the 200-yard backstroke.

Payson picked up her third victory of the meet in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.22.

Mahoney, sophomore Lily Butler and freshman Julia Brown helped push the Eagles to the victory in the six-dive one-meter event, finishing 1-2-3 in the day's third to last event. Mahoney was first with 172.65 points, followed by Butler with 135.05 points, and Brown had a score of 106.10, as the teammates pushed the Eagles to a 147-90 advantage. Gordon's freshman M.Kay Farkas won the 100-yard individual medley in 1:14.03.

Husson finished the day by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay with Payson, Madden, Winslow and Hand with a time of 1:52.63.

The Eagles will next compete at Webber Pool tomorrow at noon against Maine Maritime Academy.
