Box Score BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team got back to .500 on the young season as it outlasted Saint Joseph's College of Maine 79-64 on Saturday afternoon at Newman Gymnasium.
Husson (2-2) opened the first quarter on a tear as it quickly posted a 9-3 run in the first four minutes to take an early lead behind the inside play of graduate student Bailey Donovan and the outside shooting of juniors Lauren Cook and Sofia Torres-Reyes.
The Eagles would carry that momentum through the end of the first period as they held a 17-10 advantage. St. Joe's (2-2) would mount a comeback in the second quarter, as it got the Husson lead down to 24-22 with 2:48 remaining, but a 7-0 to close the half for the Eagles allowed them to take a 31-22 lead into the locker room.
Donovan led the charge for Husson in the opening frame, tallying eight points and five rebounds, in addition to recording two steals and blocking one shot. Junior Hannah Richards had seven of the Eagles' 13 bench points in the first half, while Husson shot just under 50% as a team during the first 20 minutes.
The second half was an offensive explosion for both teams that saw the Eagles outscore the Monks 17-12 in the third quarter, before winning a shootout in the final period 31-30 to take home the non-conference victory.
Donovan tallied 14 of her 19 second half points in the final quarter, as she finished her afternoon with a 27-point, 16-rebound double-double. Cook and Torres-Reyes combined to shoot 6-15 from beyond the arc as they poured in 17 and 14 respectively. The duo of Cook and junior Sophia McVicar made impacts beyond the stat-sheet throughout the game as they finished at +27 and +26 for the game.
Husson finished the game shooting at a 46.8% clip, while holding the opposition to just a 27.9% shooting percentage. The Eagles narrowly won the rebounding battle 40-37 and concluded their non-conference victory with 32 points in the paint.
Prior to the start of the game, Donovan was recognized for breaking the all-time women's basketball rebounding record, set by Husson Sports Hall of Fame member Sharon Siebert, earlier in the week against the University of Southern Maine.
The women's basketball team is off throughout next weekend for Thanksgiving break but will return to the court at Newman Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 28 when it hosts Bates College. Tip-off for this non-conference duel is set for 7:30 p.m.
