BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team put 13 players in the scoring column and held the University of Maine at Fort Kent to just 40 points as it opened its home scheduled with an 86-40 rout of UMFK on Tuesday evening at Newman Gymnasium.
Husson (2-0) got the first points of the game off of a layup from graduate student Derek Collin and never looked back as it led by as much as 33 in the opening 20 minutes and carried a 42-12 lead into the locker room.
Collin led the Eagles offensively in the opening half, tallying 13, while senior Jared Balser recorded six points and 11 rebounds, in addition to senior Jeremy Moronta and sophomore Eric Ahlers each scoring five in a balanced scoring attack for Husson. Reigning North Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, senior Scott Lewis backed up his recent honor as he sent away four UMFK (1-4) shots in the first half.
The second half was more of the same for the Eagles as they led by as much as 51 in the second frame and cruised to their second-consecutive win and avenged a loss to the Bengals to open their home schedule last season.
Collin finished as the leading scorer for Husson, as he tallied 16, while Moronta and junior Riles Neff also finished in double-figures as they poured in 12 and 14 respectively. Moronta also hauled in seven rebounds and dished out four assists, while Neff handed out six dimes and recorded three steals on the evening.
Balser set a new career mark on the glass as he tallied 11 boards to go along with his eight points, while Lewis concluded his evening with six rebounds of his own to go along with his four blocked shots.
The Eagles concluded their high-scoring affair shooting 46% from the floor as a team, including nearly 38% from beyond the three-point arc. Husson dominated the glass, as it held a 55-34 edge over UMFK, which included a 40-21 advantage on the defensive backboard.
Husson also finished a stout defensive effort by limiting the Bengals to just 13 made field goals for the game and just a 20% shooting percentage.
The men's basketball team will be back in action at home on Saturday when it hosts Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the sixth annual Alumni Cup and the 11th annual Husson Sports Hall of Fame Game. Tip-off for this non-conference contest is set for 1 p.m.
