BANGOR, Maine – Junior Florian Gasser's late second-half goal completes Husson University men's soccer's 2-1 comeback victory over the University of Maine at Farmington, at Boucher Field in the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship game on Saturday.
In the first half, the Eagles (13-4-3) controlled the game for the majority of the half, as they held possession for 64% of the time, but it was the UMaine-Farmington (9-8-2) who opened the scoring. The Beavers benefited from a bouncing ball inside of the Eagles defensive 18-yard box that Cade McHugh connected on and found the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage.
Farmington controlled most of the momentum over the opening 45 minutes of action and looked to be in control to open the second half, however the tide turned in the 73rd minute when freshman Hugo Llopiz countered the Beavers attack, slipping down the side line and dribbling thirty yards before playing a cross to the feet of junior Alejandro Mora at the top of the box allowing Mora a one-on-one opportunity against the UMF keeper. Mora slipped a shot from 11-yards out that beat the diving goalie and tied the game 1-1.
Mora's equalizer shifted momentum in Saturday's East Division bout, giving Husson the momentum over the final minutes and led to the eventual game-winning strike. It was Llopiz again in the 85th minute who played play maker once again, finding Gasser inside the box to send the Eagles to the conference championship game.
Husson will now battle No. 1 West Division seed SUNY Poly on Saturday for the NAC championship hosted at Boucher Field.
