SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Husson University football team dropped a hard-fought 10-9 decision to Western New England University on the road Saturday in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
Husson (5-2, 1-1 CCC) found itself down 10-9 with 1:05 remaining in Saturday's conference showdown after WNE (4-3, 1-1 CCC) scored to regain the lead after Husson led 9-3 with time winding down in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles got the ball back with 1:05 remaining and at their own 24-yard line. Senior
Nic Visser connected on several short pass completions, including a 15-yard connection with junior
Mwanza Fitzpatrick that put Husson within WNE territory.
Visser and Fitzpatrick connected again on a 12-yard complete with 14 seconds remaining as Husson was able to drive down to the Golden Bears 27-yard line setting up a 49-yard field goal attempt with :06 seconds remaining.
Junior
Cason Markevich, who connected on a 43-yard field goal earlier in the fourth quarter, missed the walk-off attempt that gave the Golden Bears the 10-9 decision.
Points were hard to come by in Saturday's matchup, WNE managed to come away with a field goal in the first quarter and take a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the fourth quarter, Markevich drilled a field goal to tie the game 3-3 with 11:28 remaining. Following a Golden Bears fumble, Husson regained possession and drove 11-plays for 64 yards, capped off by junior
Elijah Garnett's two-yard touchdown run to extend its lead to 9-3. The Eagles would miss the extra-point attempt, giving WNE the ball back with just over two minutes remaining.
The Golden Bears managed to drive 74 yards on six plays to take a 10-9 edge and held on over the final minute to secure the win.
Visser finished 20-34 through the air for 179 yards, while Garnett added 70 yards on 22 carries on the ground. Sophomore
Ashton Navarrete led all receivers on the day with five grabs for 52 yards, while Fitzpatrick finished with three catches and 38 yards.
Senior
Tucker Buzzell finished with 12 tackles on the day and two tackles for loss, while fellow senior
Adam Bertrand racked up 10 stops, one sack and forced the fumble that gave the Eagles back the ball in the fourth quarter. Additionally, senior
Tyrek Mann finished with six tackles and a sack.
Next up for the Eagles is a home conference matchup against No.19 Endicott College on Saturday at noon.
