Men's swimming & diving breaks 53-year-old single-season dual-meet win mark with sweep of Gordon, Regis

| By:

WENHAM, Mass. – Graduate student Steven Johnston and freshman Alex Walsh each won three individual events to help lead the Husson University men's swimming & diving team to a sweep in a double-dual meet over host Gordon College (160-44) and Regis College (141-70) this afternoon at the Bennett Center Natatorium in Wenham, Mass.

The Eagles improve to 8-1 on the season to break the program's single-season dual-meet win mark of seven, which was set during the 1970-71 season. Regis downed Gordon by a score of 91-83 and are now 7-5, while Gordon falls to 3-3 on the season.

Johnston won both the 50-yard backstroke and the 50-yard butterfly events with times of 26.88 and 25.23, respectively and also added a victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 50.48 to win by nearly one second over freshman Ryan Emerson to give Husson a 1-2 finish in the event.

Walsh continued his dominance in the distance events as he won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:54.75 and the 500-yard freestyle by 13 seconds with a mark of 5:14.47. He also picked up the victory in the 100-yard backstroke (57.60) as the Eagles finished 1-2 in the event thanks to a second-place finish of 1:00.99 by graduate student Joe Vail.

Sophomore Nathan Gilliam won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.09 and clocked in at 1:12.58 to finish second in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Sophomore Isaias Therio began the meet by helping the Eagles to a win in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming the backstroke ahead of Emerson, who swam the breaststroke and before senior Andrew Cote's butterfly and Vail's freestyle anchor leg to combine on a time of 1:49.01 to win the relay by nearly six seconds.

Husson returns to the pool on Saturday, January 21 when it travels to Plymouth, N.H. to take on Plymouth State University and Norwich University at 11 a.m.
