NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Husson University men's soccer team returned to New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon and returned home with a better result after defeating Colby-Sawyer, 4-2, at Kelsey Soccer Field.
The Eagles (1-1) used three goals in the opening thirty minutes as it all started in the eighth minute as sophomore
Florian Gasser made a move inside the box before being bought down by a Charger (1-1) defender for the penalty kick. Sophomore
Alejandro Mora stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the top left corner. The intensity continued for the Eagles as they consistently found gaps in the Chargers' defense before sophomore Arni Hreidarrsson found the second goal of the contest. Graduate student
Tyler Welch slid the ball perfectly to Hreidarsson, who shifted the ball right before belting home the ensuing shot in the bottom left corner. The Eagles added a third as senior
Ben Shumway played a ball behind the Chargers' backline and Gasser was there to nod it over the onrushing keeper and put home by the retreating defense.
In the second half, the Chargers changed their formation and found results by cutting the Eagles' lead down to one by the 77th minute thanks to goals from Callum Buchanan and Jadon Baros.
Less than a minute after the Chargers' second goal; the Eagles put the game to bed. Senior
Jarod Bolton connected on a corner kick from Gasser to send the Eagles back home with the victory.
In the victory, sophomore
Alex Rechsteiner provided two saves for the Eagles.
"Today was all about character," said head coach
Gavin Penny. "Obviously the result on Thursday was simply not good enough. Last year we worked incredibly hard to build an identity and a way of playing. There were a number of reasons why, but we had lost that identity throughout the start of this season. Today the message was simple, let's go back to doing what we did last year. Maybe Thursday was a "welcome back to college football" type of game where the lads were reminded of the kind of effort it takes to win a game. We embodied that effort and work rate today and got our just rewards for our efforts. We were absolutely fantastic in the first half and they made us work extra hard in the second half to protect our lead. We are still working our way back to where we were at the back end of last season and we are all happy with our performance today. We are aware of the task we have ahead of us next Saturday and have a week of training to prepare for a redemption match next weekend."
The men's soccer team will almost a week off before their next game as they will begin North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when they visit Bob Leib Field on the campus of UMaine-Farmington.
