BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University football team dropped its home-opener to Plymouth State University 17-0 on Saturday at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex in Bangor.
The Panthers and the Eagles played through an offensive struggle for the majority of the first half until Plymouth State (2-0) finally broke through with 2:27 left in the first half to take a 7-0 lead.
Husson (0-2) had a scoring opportunity on the ensuing drive, but junior quarterback
Nic Visser was intercepted in the endzone with 11 seconds left to close out the half.
The Eagles failed to convert on a Panthers turnover to start the second half and the third quarter went scoreless and the lead remained 7-0 for Plymouth State going into the final period.
The Panthers would cap off another scoring drive to begin the fourth quarter to give them a two-touchdown lead. After a Husson turnover-on-downs, Plymouth State would tack on a field goal to extend its lead to 17-0.
The Eagles attempted to make one last push, but their final drive of the game would stall on the Panthers 10-yard-line and allow Plymouth State to salt away the final minutes of the game.
Visser led the passing attack for Husson with 180 yards, while sophomore
Elijah Garnett led the rushing attack with 45 yards on 16 carries.
Senior
Jon Bell hauled in four passes and gained 51 yards to lead the Eagles air attack.
Junior
Tucker Buzzell recorded 17 total tackles in the game, which tied him for the second-most total tackles in a single-game in Husson history. Additionally, Buzzell broke the program record for assisted tackles in a game with 15 stops.
The Eagles will look to rebound Saturday when they host SUNY Alfred for a noon kickoff.
