Box Score BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University Eagles (13-9) advanced to the North Atlantic Conference East Division Championship game with a 89-66 win over the Northern-Vermont University Lyndon Hornets (7-18) at Newman Gymnasium on Friday evening.
Husson opened the first half firing on all cylinders as they started the game on a 27-4 run. Lyndon was able to cut the deficit to 15 on a three by senior Luke Fredsell, but the Eagles closed the half on a 8-0 run to take a 41-18 lead into the locker room.
Husson was led by senior guard Justice Kendall in the first half, as he tallied 11 points in the frame. Graduate student Justin Thompson also scored nine points for the Eagles in addition to grabbing six rebounds. Husson shot just under 50% from the field in the first half and outrebounded the Hornets by a 28-16 margin during the half.
Fredsell paced Lyndon in the first half tallying six points on two three-pointers, while senior Zach Falkenburg recorded five.
Husson stretched its lead out to as many as 32 during the second half, before Lyndon came alive from the outside and tried to fight its way back into the game. The Hornets would go on a 20-8 run, which saw them hit six three-pointers during the stretch. Husson wouldn't let the game get closer, as they closed out the win.
The Eagles were led by Thompson, who tallied a 17-point, 14-rebound double-double for Husson and was one of five players to score in double-figures for the team. Additionally for Husson, seniors DJ Bussey and Brett Cunningham tallied 14 and 13 points respectively, while Kendall finished with 12 points. Junior Jared Balser rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Eagles, as he finished with 10 points, in addition to ripping down nine rebounds. Husson shot nearly 53% for the game and continued its dominance on the boards, winning the rebound margin 55-31.
Fredsell led the Hornets scoring attack as he recorded 21 points on seven three-pointers. Sophomore Mondwell Bukle tallied 14 points, including four three's, off the bench for Lyndon, while Falkenburg poured in 10 points. The Hornets showcased some hot-shooting from beyond the arc, as they recorded 13 made three's in the second half.
Husson advances to the NAC East Division Championship on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and will play the winner of the number two seed University of Maine-Farmington and number three seed University of Maine-Presque Isle.
