Women's basketball began NAC slate with victory over UMPI

Box Score BANGOR, Maine  – Sophomore Hannah Richards recorded 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Husson University women's basketball team opened up North Atlantic Conference play with a 70-64 win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon at Newman Gymnasium.

Husson (4-3, 1-0 NAC) got off to a slow start as UMPI (3-3, 0-1 NAC) was able to jump out to a 9-2 lead over the first five minutes. The Eagles were able to rebound to finish off the quarter and at the start of the second quarter as they went on a 23-12 run to take a 25-21 lead with 2:39 left in the opening half. Bench points played a huge factor in the run for Husson as they scored 18 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Owls ended the half on a 8-1 run to take a 29-26 lead into
the locker room.

Sophomore Maci Beals paced the Eagles in the first half as she scored five points off the bench. Eight other Husson players found the scoring column in the half which saw the two teams
combine to shoot just 37% and as well as commit 22 turnovers.

The two offenses heated up in the third quarter but the Eagles were only able to shave one point off of the UMPI lead as they won the quarter 18-17 but still trailed 46-44 going into the final frame.

Richards sparked Husson in the fourth quarter as she scored all 10 of her points during the quarter and helped give the Eagles a 63-57 lead with just under two minutes remaining. Husson was able to hit their free throws and hang on for the conference victory.

Junior Bailey Donovan led the Eagles offensively as she put in 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Richards rounded out the double-figure scoring with her 10 points. Three Husson players each recorded at least three steals in the game as sophomore Roxanne Sasse earned four steals and fellow sophomore Jordyn Lengle and graduate student Vanessa Duarte recorded three steals apiece.

Women's basketball returns to non-conference action on Wednesday as they will travel to Fort Kent to take on the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Tip-off for this contest is set for 6 p.m.
