MILTON, Mass. —Husson University football junior
Nic Visser's five touchdowns help the Eagles beat Curry College 38-26 to improve to 2-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference on Saturday, while junior
Tucker Buzzell accounted for three turnovers.
Husson (3-4, 2-1 CCC) wasted little time getting on the board Saturday striking for an opening drive touchdown on a 39-yard Visser pass to senior
Jon Bell, capped off by senior
Aaron Paradis' extra point.
The touchdown ended a 6-play, 66-yard drive that lasted the opening three minutes of Saturday's conference showdown.
After Curry's opening drive ended with a failed fourth-down conversion on the Husson one-yard line, the Eagles would regain possession, but Visser would get picked off on a third down conversion giving Colonels excellent field possession at their own 17-yard line.
However, four plays later junior
Alex Brown intercepted a Curry pass attempt giving the Eagles back possession.
Curry (3-4, 1-2 CCC) benefitted from a rare safety on the next play to pull within 7-2 of the Eagles and later took a 9-7 advantage following a score on the safety punt possession.
The Colonel's lead was short lived though as Husson needed just a minute to regain a 14-9 lead when Visser tallied his second passing touchdown on the day, this time connecting with sophomore
Russ Walker on a 42-yard dime.
Following back-to-back Curry and Husson punts, the Colonels drove deep into Eagles territory, but Buzzell intercepted a Justin Mulaney pass for his second pick in as many games to give the Eagles the ball with 4:15 remaining in the half.
Curry benefitted from another Husson interception on its next possession and added a field goal before half to pull with 14-12 of the Eagles.
The Colonels got the ball to start the second half, but fumbled on their second play of the half and Buzzel jumped on the ball for a Husson recovery.
The following possession, freshman
Jed Lober crossed the goaline for his second collegiate touchdown, but the play was called back due to a holding penalty. Visser, however needed just two plays to put the Eagles back on the board, connecting with Walker again for a 10-yard passing touchdown and a 21-12 Husson lead.
Paradis added a 23-yard field goal for the Eagles with 4:25 remaining in the third quarter to increase the Eagles lead to 24-12, but Curry answered with an 11-play, 60-yard drive to pull back within 24-19.
Visser answered the Colonels drive with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive for the Eagles adding his fourth passing touchdown on the day, hitting senior
Cristian Walker on a three-yard pass to give Husson a 31-19 edge.
Buzzell added his second interception of the game with 6:32 remaining in the game and Visser crossed the goal line on a two-yard quarterback keep to record his fifth score of the afternoon and put the Eagles up 38-19.
Curry scored on its next possession to make the score 38-26, but Husson recovered the ensuing on-side kick and ran out the final :54 seconds to earn a hard-fought conference road win.
Visser finished 18-24 for 261 yards and four touchdowns through the air, adding 35 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Lober recorded 81-yards rushing, while Bell posted five catches for 89 yards and a score.
Sophomore
Cullen Casey posted his best as an Eagle, registered six catches for 80 yards.
Defensively, Buzzell finished five nine tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, while junior
Tyrek Mann notched nine tackles as well.
Husson will get a much-needed bye week before hosting the Western New England University on Oct. 29 at noon.
