Men's Soccer Keeps Clean Sheet vs. Plymouth State, 2-0

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson Eagles men's soccer team shutout Plymouth State University 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles move to 1-0-1 on the season after their first victory over the Panthers in the last ten tries while Plymouth State falls to 0-3-0 on the season.

The Eagles had a couple chances but weren't able to find the breakthrough until the 19th minute when Pablo Maroto launched Jordi Cabau into a 1v1 with the keeper as Cabau fired a shot that went off the keeper and gave the Eagles the lead.

In the 33rd minute, the Eagles were able to double the lead and put the game to bed thanks to the offensive effort by Ben Shumway. He found freedom on the right flank and drove into the box only to be met by a Panthers' defender and was taken down for the penalty kick. Mario Alvarez stepped up and smashed the ball into the top right corner for his first collegiate goal.

In the second half the Eagles kept the attempts coming as they outshot the Panthers 17-5 and had 11 corner kicks to their three, but PSU's goalkeeper Nicolas Cornejo came up with a couple big saves to keep the scoreline at 2-0 Husson.

After the game head coach Gavin Penny said, "I am glad we got a win today. We had a lot of the ball again and controlled the entire match, however I didn't quite feel like we put the pieces together very well. We did a better job breaking down the defensive layer and getting in behind, while also making the keeper make saves. But I know we are capable of so much more. We can be so much better than we were today. We have some things to work on and hope that we can improve on these things in the next game."

It is a quick turnaround for the Eagles as they prepare to host Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday, September 7th for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
