Box Score NORTON, MA – Olivia Birbara scored early in the fourth period to break a tie and lift Wheaton College to a 3-2 comeback field hockey win over visiting Husson University at Nordin Field Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles fell to 0-2 in the early season while the Lyons fell improved to 3-2.
Husson outshot the hosts, 15-13, and junior goaltender Kimmie Goddard made three saves for the guests. Emma Lapreziosa made seven stops in the Wheaton net.
Wheaton opened the scoring at 7:32 as Lindsay Janeczek notched her third goal in the team's fifth game of the season. But the Eagles tied it at 11:56 as junior Adelle Foss scored her second of the year for Husson.
The Eagles scored just 3:19 into the second period to take their first lead. Sophomore Julie Mitch made it 2-1 with her first tally of the season. The lead held up into halftime.
But it didn't take long after the break for the Lyons to tie it at 2-2. Sophie Shekarchi scored her third of the year with an assist from Janeczek just 44 seconds into the third period. But it remained tied up as each goalie had to make just one stop through the rest of the third stanza.
Just 3:40 into the fourth period, the Lyons took their first lead of the day. Sophie Shekarchi set up Birbara, who tallied her second of the season to give Wheaton a 3-2 lead. It held up, although Husson's Ryley Newcomb looked to tie it but her shot went wide with 2:43 left in regulation.
Foss led the Eagles with four shots, including three on the cage.
Husson returns to action Saturday, September 18 for a New England Collegiate Conference match at New England College at 1 p.m.
