Men's Soccer Fights for 1-1 Draw with Southern Maine in Season Opener

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson men's soccer team (0-0-1) and the University of Southern Maine Huskies (0-0-1) battled to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Boucher Field after double-overtime despite Husson being down a man for twenty minutes.

The Eagles fired twenty shots with many just missing the goal but found their lone breakthrough in the 28th minute when Fred Longo played a simple pass to Pablo Maroto Yepes and he took a touch then fired it home from about 25 yards out off the bottom of the crossbar and over the keeper's head. Both Maroto Yepes and Longo opened their scoring accounts as Eagles with Maroto Yepes getting his first collegiate goal and Longo with his first collegiate assist.

The Huskies scored their lone tally in the 69th minute off a volley shot by Tyler St. Martin that found bottom corner of the Eagle net to give Southern Maine the equalizer and eventually the draw.

Despite being a man down in overtime the Eagles had the best chances with Joao Passoni and Pedro Molina Sanchez just missing the golden goal.

"I am incredibly frustrated with tonight's result and we only have ourselves to blame," said Head Coach Gavin Penny. "We worked incredibly hard and completely controlled the game, but in the end the game still ended in a draw. We didn't do enough to win the game! The box score speaks for itself. It's no good to have 20 shots and 15 corner kicks yet their goalkeeper only recorded one save. Credit to them for staying alive in the contest but we are all very frustrated with the outcome. While we have some experience leaders within our squad now, we also have a lot of very good young players again. We need to make better decisions all around and make our dominant displays count for something. It was a very promising display aside from our finishing and I hope that we are able to fix this for Sunday's game."
