Box Score BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University Women's Basketball (1-0) team picked up a 74-50 victory over the Owls of the University of Maine at Presque Isle (0-1) in their first game in almost a year inside Newman Gymnasium on Friday evening.
IN THE ACTION:
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind two made jump shots by Bailey Donovan and Vanessa Duarte before UMPI stormed back to tie the game at 6-6 with 7:28 left in the first quarter. After a layup by Donovan to make the score 12-6, the Owls once again countered with a short 4-0 run cutting the Green and Gold advantage to two (10-12) after Marissa Reagle nailed her second free throw with 3:57 remaining in the opening stanza. Husson and UMPI traded baskets back-and-forth for the remaining minutes of the quarter as the Eagles took a 23-17 lead into the second quarter.
Husson came out strong to begin the second quarter, scoring the first three points to take a 26-18 lead. A jump shot by Trinity Montigny pushed the Eagles lead to 30-20. The Owls responded by going on an 11-4 run to pull within three points of the Green and Gold's advantage (31-34) with 3:15 left in the first half. Two made free throws by Amanda D'Amico as time expired gave Husson a 36-33 lead going into halftime.
A layup by Emily Wheaton with 9:13 left in the third quarter gave the Owls their only lead of the game, with the score at 37-36. The Eagles retook the lead at the 8:25 mark after Duarte hit a shot from downtown. A Lexi Ireland made jump shot with 3:34 remaining in the third, cut the Eagle lead to two, but that was closest the Owls got for the remaining minutes of the game as Husson went on to pick up a 74-50 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Achieving her first career 30-point game, Donovan finished with a game-high 34 points and 20 boards to become the first player in program history to record a combination of 30 points and 20 rebounds in a single game while adding two assists, steals and blocks.
- Duarte scored 11 points with six assists and two rebounds.
- Ireland came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points for the Owls with six boards and three steals.
- Emma Alley, Montigny and D'Amico each contributed eights points for the Eagles.
