Men's Basketball Denied Comeback Attempt at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Husson University men's basketball team comeback effort fell just short in a 92-91 loss to the MIT Engineers on Tuesday night at the Rockwell Cage. With the result, both teams moved to 1-1 overall on the season. 

The Engineers opened up the contest with six points in the first twenty seconds and jumped out to a 32-18 lead before the Eagles came roaring back thanks to 9-of-10 shooting down the stretch as MIT led 50-42 at halftime. Three point shooting was the difference in the first half as MIT made 11 3's while the Eagles made four. Both teams shot exactly 50% (18-36) from the field. 

In the second half, both teams traded baskets for the first five minutes then the Eagles attempted the comeback as they used an 11-2 run to cut the MIT lead down to three with 11 minutes left. The Eagles continued to slowly cut down the lead until finally a layup from senior Justice Kendall gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest at 77-76 with six minutes left. The Engineers outscored the Eagles, 16-15, to close out the game and earn the one-point victory. Sophomore Jeremy Moronta attempted an off-balance jumper at the buzzer but fell just short.  

HUSSON STATS:

  • DJ Bussey scored a team-high 20 points of 6-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. 

  • Kendall scored 17 points for the second straight game.

  • Graduate student Justin Thompson chipped in 15 points and six rebounds. 

  • Junior Jared Balser was two points shy of a double-double with eight points and ten rebounds. 

  • The Eagles shot over 50% (38-for-72) from the field while MIT shot 48.6% (35-for-72) from the field.

MIT STATS: 

  • Giannis Chatziveroglou scored a game-high 24 points as he played a full 40 minutes. 

  • Alex Cho fell just short of a double-double with 22 points and nine assists. 

  • Julian Manyika added 16 points from the bench.

  • MIT hit 16 three's while the Eagles tallied nine. 

UP NEXT!

The Eagles host the Bengals of the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Friday, November 12th in their home opener with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
