Women's Basketball Falls in Triple Overtime to SJC

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - For the second time, the Husson University women's basketball team played the longest game in program history as they fell to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College (Maine), 98-92, in three overtimes on Saturday afternoon at Newman Gym. With the victory, the Monks go to 2-1 on the season while the Eagles fall to 2-3.

The first half for the Eagles was shaky as they struggled to find their offensive power especially when junior Bailey Donovan went to the bench in the first quarter because of foul trouble and did not play in the second quarter. Despite leading 10-7 after the first quarter, the Eagles trailed 30-21 at halftime.

In the third quarter, it was all Husson. Donovan outscored the Monks alone in the quarter, 15-14, while also freeing up seniors Vanessa Duarte and Megan Peach to score a combined ten points. Husson led 51-44 heading into the fourth.

Cassandra Stapelfeld found her shooting groove for the Monks in the fourth quarter as she had 14 points of 4-for-5 shooting from behind the arc as she helped put the Monks in front 69-66 with 25 seconds left. The Eagles would respond and force overtime when Duarte hit her only three of the contest with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 69.

Just like in the fourth quarter, the Monks held a lead late. A Stapelfeld three give the Monks an 80-77 lead with 12 seconds left then first year Sophia McVicar hits a three after an offensive rebound by Donovan to tie the game at 80. The Monks had another opportunity to win the game with a layup but Peach was there for the block as we headed to double overtime.

With four seconds left in double overtime, Donovan converted an and-1 opportunity to give the Eagles a 89-86 lead but Angelica Hurley hit a deep three for the Monks to send the game into triple overtime.

In the third overtime, the Monks outscored the Eagles 9-3 to take the non-conference victory.
