Men's Soccer Advances to NAC Semifinal After 4-0 Win Over MMA

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University men's soccer team scored twice on either side of the break as they defeated Maine Maritime Academy, 4-0, to advance the North Atlantic Conference East Divisional Final on Sunday, October 31st at 1 p.m. at Boucher Field.

The Eagles continued their fine form against the Mariners with two goals in the first half. Jordi Cabau plays playmaker in the 10th minute as he splits the Mariners defense with an over the top ball and Alejandro Mora was on the receiving end for the easy score. In the 27th minute, the Eagles broke down the Mariners defense again as Jarod Bolton and Arni Hreidarsson both were onside with the keeper to beat, and Bolton set up Hreidarsson for the easy tap in.

The Eagles continued the pressure and earned the opening goal in the second half as Gerard Arias with a sliding tackle to clear the ball up the right side of the field and his pass found Joao Passoni. Passoni, inside the box, slid it over to Hreidarsson and he made a 360 before firing a low shot into the bottom corner for his second of the game. In the 69th minute, Florian Gasser marked his return from injury with an assist as he set up Jahmal Williams for the final goal of the contest.

Alexander Rechsteiner made the only save of the contest for the Eagles as he played the first 69 minutes before Benjamin Powell took over for the rest of the game. For the Mariners, Trevor Gray made six saves before being replaced by Matthew Castella in the 71st minute.

Thoughts from the gaffer, Gavin Penny. "I am very pleased with our performance today. Being the #1 seed comes with pressure to perform and I thought the lads did a great job of showing why they were the #1 seed this weekend. We did a great job of squeezing MMA and prevent them from playing while limiting how many shots they had on our goal. We created a lot of fantastic chances and put four of them away. I am happy we are advancing to the NAC East Championship game but we know that UMF have also enjoyed a fantastic season and will give us a good challenge. We rotated many players today so I'm hopeful the extra rest will help us through tomorrow."

The Eagles will host UMaine-Farmington in the NAC East Division Final on Sunday, October 31st with kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
