Big First Half Fuels Eagles' 67-49 Win Over Southern Maine

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University (4-4) women's basketball team opened up a 22-point halftime lead en route to a 67-49 victory over the University of Southern Maine (5-6) on Tuesday night in non-conference action at William P. Newman Gymnasium.

IN THE ACTION:

Southern Maine's largest lead of the game came in the opening two minutes of play, as Kristen Curley put the Huskies ahead 2-0 with a jumper one minute and 13 seconds into the contest. Husson scored the next four points with back-to-back jumpers by Joan Overman and Sami Ireland to take a 4-2 lead with 7:06 to play in the quarter. The Huskies tied the game on a jumper by Jackie Luckhardt 19 seconds later but a made free throw by Joan Overman at the 6:20 mark helped spark a closing quarter run of 11-0, that helped Husson take a 15-4 lead into the second quarter.  

The Eagles stretched their advantage to 19 (28-9) midway through the second stanza following a Sydney Allen jumper that capped a 13-5 run, and Husson went on to hold a 37-14 lead at halftime after Allen drained a long-range shot with two seconds left on the clock.

Husson continued to add to their advantage in the third quarter, with the lead reaching 26 (43-17) on a made jumper by Bailey Donovan with 4:55 left in the quarter. A late two-pointer from Ireland gave Husson a comfortable 47-25 cushion at the end of the third.

Southern Maine battled its way back into the game in the final frame, scoring the first five points of the period to cut the deficit to 15 (47-32) in the first 40 seconds of the quarter. Back-to-back layups by Donovan pushed the lead back to 19 (51-32) at the 7:45 mark, but Southern Maine responded with a 14-2 run to cut the deficit to eight (53-45) with 2:45 remaining in the contest.

Ireland knocked down a jumper and Emma Alley connected on a pair of free throws at the 1:53 mark to extend Husson's lead back into double figures, putting the game out of reach.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Allen scored a game-high and career-high 19 points with two assists and two rebounds.
  • Ireland added 14 points and ten rebounds to record her first double-double of the season, while adding two assists, one steal and two blocks.
  • Donovan tallied seven points and grabbed a career-high 18 boards off the bench with three assists.
  • Victoria Harris led the Huskies with 16 points, while adding two rebounds, one steal and one block.
  • Abi Ramirez contributed nine points, four steals, one assist, and four boards.
  • Luckhardt had eight points with one assist and one rebound.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Husson improves to 18-34 in the history of the series with Southern Maine and has now defeated the Huskies in six-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2014-15 season, the longest winning streak since Husson won seven from 1974-77.
