Strong Running Game Leads Football Over UNE, 47-7

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Husson University Eagles (1-1) defeated University of New England (0-2), 47-7, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference football action at the newly-renovated UNE Blue Storm Stadium. This game marked the first varsity matchup in program history versus a State of Maine school and the first varsity home football game for UNE.

FOR HUSSON:

  • Solomon Hassen ran for 245 yards on the ground, the third most yards gained by a first-year player in a single-game in program history, on 28 attempts and two scores.
  • Hassen also added two catches for 36 yards.
  • Miece Loureiro carried the ball eight times for 66 yards and one score on the ground.
  • Cory Brandon completed 17-of-25 pass attempts for 223 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Brandon struck for touchdowns of 19, 11, and five yards on the day.
  • Kyle Gaudet caught seven passes for 65 yards and a score.
  • Keyshaun Robinson recorded 62 yards on five catches with a touchdown.
  • The dual-threat of Ty Bassett caught three passes for 60 yards and ran for 53 yards on three carries with two touchdowns - one in air and one on the ground.
  • Devin Pickett converted all five of his extra points to extend his school record of consecutive extra points made to 36.
  • Jake Dobos led the Eagle defense with eight tackles and an interception.
  • Elvin Suazo recorded six tackles with a sack, one tackle for loss and an interception.
  • Jordan Ayer added four tackles.
  • De'Wayne Smith and Quan Soyini each had three tackles and an interception.
  • Tyreek Bromley and Javaris Carrigan each had a sack, while David Redmond added an interception.

FOR UNE:

  • Brian Peters finished with 268 yards through the air, but four interceptions.
  • Gaboury led all receivers with six catches for 104 yards on the day
  • Haelin Roberts added five catches for 61 yards.
  • Devon Charles carried the ball five times for nine yards.
  • Keegan Stanton-Meas led the Nor'Easter's defense with 14 tackles (11 solo) and an interception.
  • GianCarlo Diaz had 10 tackles and a sack.

GAME REVIEW:

  • Brandon found Gaudet from 19 yards out on Husson's opening drive to put the visitors ahead 7-0.
  • After a punt to start the game, the next two UNE drives ended with interceptions.
  • Following the second pick, Hassen burst out to a 41-yard score and after a muffed extra point the score was 13-0.
  • The second quarter was much of the same as Husson used its running game to score three more touchdowns and pull in front 33-0 at halftime.
  • Three-and-outs by both teams gave UNE the ball at their own 41 with 4:35 to play in the third quarter. A six-play, 59-yard drive ended as Peters found Gaboury for 37 yards for a touchdown to make the score 33-7.
  • Husson tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

 TEAM STATS:

  • Husson accumulated 612 yards on offense, averaging 8.1 yards per play.
  • Husson finished with 229 yards of passing (8.8 per pass) on 18-for-26 attempts, and rushed for 383 yards on 50 carries (7.7 per rush).
  • The Husson defense, which surrendered 247 yards of total offense (268 pass, -21 rush) to UNE (4.2 yards per play), was particularly tough on third down, allowing the Nor'Easters to convert on just three of their 13 attempts (23%), while forcing five turnovers and sacking the quarterback three times on the afternoon.
  • The -21 yards of rushing, is the third lowest yards allowed in a single-game in program history and the lowest since 2016 at Mount Ida (-25).
  • The five interceptions are the most in a single-game since 2006 when Husson picked off five at Pace, a NCAA Division II school.

UP NEXT:

Husson returns home next Saturday hosting future Commonwealth Coast Football opponent, Western New England University Golden Bears for the first time at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

The Nor'easters are on the road next Saturday against Hampden-Sydney. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
