Women's Basketball Outlasts Lyndon, 60-47

BANGOR, MAINE - The Husson University women's basketball team (13-9, 11-4 NAC) defeated the Lyndon Hornets (13-9, 9-6 NAC), 60-47, Friday night in North Atlantic Confernce (NAC) action at Newman Gymnasium. The Eagles worked through a slow offensive start in the first half to turn it around in the second half for the win.

THE STORY:

The Hornets started the game off with a quick 4-0 run and it stayed that way until Emma Alley opened up the scoring for the Eagles with a deep three. The first quarter saw both teams handling the ball an equal amount with limited scoring opportunities. Lyndon used a 7-0 run late in the quarter to build to their lead, but the Eagles offense came alive and at the end of first the score was in favor of Lyndon 13-7.

The offense continued to be slow for the Eagles through the second quarter. Lyndon used a 10-0 run midway through the quarter to build their momentum. At the half, Lyndon shot 10-31 from the floor while the Eagles shot 5-39. At the start of the second half, the Hornets lead Husson 24-15.

The Eagles came out of the locker room a different team using a 9-0 run in the opening minutes of the third to tie the game at 24-24. Alley started the run with a short jumper, followed by baskets from Kenzie Worcester, Anna MacKenzie, Joan Overman, and Sarah Bragg. In the final minute of the third, Jordan Butler drained a three followed by another three from Logan Huckins. Going into the final ten minutes of play the score was 39-39.

Butler continued her hot streak making two threes and a quick jumper in the opening minutes of the fourth. Husson took their lead to 49-45 midway through the quarter forcing Lyndon to take a timeout. The Eagles continued to push the tempo of the game and lead by nine heading into the final minute of the game. A steal from MacKenzie and a jumper from Overman in the final seconds of the game sealed the 60-47 victory.

LEADERS: HUSSON

  • Jordan Butler tallied 13 points, three rebounds, and was 3-7 from beyond the arc.
  • Kenzie Worcester recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 points and ten rebounds, while adding three assists.
  • Joan Overman dropped eight points, grabbed eight rebounds, and handed out four helpers.

LEADERS: LYNDON

  • Mikayla Hodge had 13 points, 26 rebounds, and two blocks.
  • Gabrielle Foy added 14 points, two assists, and was 4-10 from the 3-point line.
  • Victoria Carlson tallied seven points, four rebounds, and a steal.

TEAM STATS:

The Hornets edged the Eagles in field goal percentage, 30% to 29.3%. The Eagles had eight steals to the Hornets one, and Lyndon turned the ball over 23 times compared to Husson's eight.

NEXT:

The Eagles continue their homestand facing off against the Johnson Badgers at 1:00 p.m. on February 10 in Newman Gymnasium.
