Volleyball Battles Owls and Bengals on Senior Day

BANGOR, Maine – Hosting four matches in Newman Gym on Saturday, the Husson University volleyball team (5-18, 2-3 NAC) was the only team to take a match to four sets battling the University of Maine at Fort Kent (24-5) while also contending within four points against the University of Maine at Presque Isle (10-15, 3-1 NAC) in all three sets. The Eagles hosted their senior day for the lone senior of the 2018 season, Kate Woods, who accumulated 14 kills, two aces, and 34 digs by the end of the day. 

UMaine-Presque Isle 3 – Husson 0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-22)

The Eagles were relentless, despite constantly falling behind, they would pick up their heads and climb back up maintaining just a couple points between them and their opponent. In the third set, Husson dug their way out of a huge comeback after being down 11-3, the Eagles took off on a run as they came back to within one point of the Owls, 22-21, before dropping the conference match. 

Several Eagles hit double digits on defense on Saturday, with libero Adrienne Beatty in the lead with a total of 24, while Alex Martinez (14 digs), Hanna Hembrow (12 digs), and Mary Grace Power (11 digs) all chipped in a significant amount of effort on defense. Hembrow also set up 22 kills and smashed four service aces. Leading the team offensively, Serena Laro found the floor for six kills. 

Every single Owl that played recorded at least one serving ace by the end of the three sets. Dominating the floor, Devine Hoskie easily recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 27 digs. Laura Aroz consistently set up her teammates on the attack, accumulating 27 assists and three aces. Maddie Thweatt and Ashlon Stroub both sent over four kills and hit double digits in digs. 

UMaine-Fort Kent 3 – Husson 1 (25-7, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17)

In her senior game, Woods tied for the most kills with Power as they both rocked nine over the net. Husson's setter Hembrow once again tallied the majority of the assists as she pushed the ball up for 23 assists recording her 8th double-double of the season adding on 11 digs. Defensive specialists, Beatty and Delaney Chisholm chipped in 14 and 15 digs while Laro was on fire behind the net stopping the Bengals' attack with three solo blocks and one block assist. 

Tallying a team total of 52 kills by the end of four sets, the Bengals' setter Haley West put up 40 assists for the win while also hitting an impressive .455 with six kills. Rachel Nance was on a roll on the attack hitting 14 kills while Peyton Spragling added on 12. Luse Lumas was consistent finding the quick points with five service aces while the Bengals' libero Ashlyn Ferreria scooped up 24 total digs. 

Closing out their regular season on their home court, the Eagles finished with a 2-3 record in the NAC as the No. 4 seed. Husson will venture to #1 Maine Maritime (20-6, 5-0 NAC) for a NAC Semifinal match on Friday, November 2nd with a tentative time scheduled for 6 p.m.
