Box Score

CASTINE, Maine – Junior guard Kenzie Worcester surpassed her 1000th career point after competing in a record-breaking 66 games, the fastest a player has ever reached this feat while helping the Husson Eagles defeat the Maine Maritime Mariners, 69-61, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

With this win, the Eagles improve to 5-5 on the season and 4-1 in the NAC. Worcester broke several records throughout the day, scoring a career-high 36 points which is the fourth most points scored in a single game in program history. This achievement was possible due to the numerous times she was sent to the free throw line, displaying near perfection draining 20-of-23 baskets as she broke yet another Husson program record netting the most points in a single game from the charity stripe.  As a team altogether, the Eagles also broke the most points scored from the free throw line in one game, 33-of-43.

The two teams exchanged the lead back-and-forth in the opening minutes, until the Eagles went on an 8-2 run to take an 11-6 lead. The Eagles held an 18-14 advantage after the first quarter.

Melinda Ogden hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Mariners (5-5, 2-3 NAC) a 20-18 lead with 8:36 to play in the second quarter. The Mariners took a seven-point lead (29-22) following a three from Morgan Boudreau, but the Eagles fought back and the two teams entered halftime deadlocked at 31-31.

The Eagles went on a 10-2 run to open up the third quarter and took a 41-33 lead. The Mariners continued to battle and a layup from Alayne Felix at 2:52 tied the game up at 44-44. With 1:18 to play in the third, Felix hit another layup to give the Mariners a 49-48 lead, but Husson's Joan Overman made a free throw to once again tie the game up entering the fourth quarter.

Husson outscored the Mariners 10-4 to take a 59-52 lead with 3:31 to play in the fourth, and hung on to claim the 69-61 victory.

Felix led the Mariners with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding two blocks and an assist. Ogden contributed 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal, and a block.

Sami Ireland contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Overman also contributed under the hoop, snatching up eight boards, three assists, and three steals.

The Eagles shot 36.2% from the floor while the Mariners shot 34.6%. Husson held a 41-31 edge in rebounds.

The women's basketball team will be back on the road next week on Tuesday, Jan. 9th as they travel to the University of Maine-Farmington for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
