Men's Soccer Stings Hornets, 4-0

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team won, 4-0, against Lyndon State on Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field.

The Eagles improve to 4-4 (3-2 NAC) with the win, while the Hornets drop to 4-3 (1-3 NAC).

Husson started off well, with the majority of possession of the ball. The Eagles threatened the Hornet's defense constantly, but failed to score in the opening part of the first half. The Eagles had to wait until the 41st minute until they were able to score. Saker Ghanayem found Nathan Firlings, who had plenty of space in front of goal. Firlings placed the ball into the left side of the net and made it 1-0 to the Eagles. That was the only goal of the first half.

In the second half, Husson came out determined to secure the victory. Nathan Firlings scored his second goal of the game in the 48th minute. He got a touch on the ball after a cross from Spencer Miranda and was able to guide the ball into the goal. Less than two minutes later, the Eagles scored their third goal of the game. Miguel Caballero got past a couple of defenders before poking the ball past the goalkeeper. Husson continued to attack after that. Spencer Miranda crossed the ball into Alvaro Valls. The latter got a slight touch of the ball, and that was enough to secure a 4-0 lead for the Eagles. Both teams had some minor chances after that, but Valls' goal proved to be the last one of the match.

The Eagles outshot the Hornets 24-7 in the game. Cody Gross made three saves for Husson, while Matt LaClair made five saves for Lyndon.

"I thought today was going to be another one of those days where we couldn't finish," said head coach Gavin Penny. "Chance after chance went by in the first half and we could not find the answer. Thankfully our rookies figured it out and they combined exceptionally well in the first 10 minutes of the second half to get us all 3 points. We still have to improve because we won't have the luxury of that many opportunities against better teams. However, I'm happy we got the job done and everyone played a part."

The Eagles have a tight schedule right now and return to action on Sunday. They host Johnson State at 12:00 PM on Boucher Field.
