Field Hockey Loses in Double Overtime to #17 University of New England, 2-1

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University field hockey team fell to #17 University of New England, 2-1, in two overtime periods in a non-conference matchup on Monday at the John W. Winkin Sports Complex.

Husson and UNE were scoreless through the first half of the game. Husson recorded six shots and three shots on goal while the Nor'easters tallied eight shots with five shots on goal. Anne-Marie Provencal had five saves in the net while Liz Sargent had three.

Just eleven minutes into the second half, Vonde Saunders knocked one passed Provencal to grab the first goal of the game and take a 1-0 lead with 24 minutes remaining in the game.

The Eagles offense answered back with a goal in the 59th minute to tie the game, 1-1. Sadie Royer drove the ball through the defensive line, after a pass from Arika Brochu, to even the score. Both teams were unable to add another goal before the end of the half, forcing an overtime period.

Just 2:29 into the second overtime period, Alex Staples tallied the winning goal after cutting through the defense and tucking in a shot behind the goalkeeper Provencal.

Provencal tallied 12 saves out of the 14 shots on goal through the 87:29 minutes of play. Nor'easter Liz Sargent collected the win with 7 saves on 8 shots on goal.

The Eagles will host Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Wednesday, September 13, for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference matchup at John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
