The Eagles Handle Thomas More, 10-4

WINTER HAVEN, FL. – The Husson University baseball team (3-2) defeated the Thomas More Saints (2-1), 10-4, on Wednesday afternoon, thanks to a seven run 5th inning.

The Eagles wasted little time scoring their first run of the game. In the top of 1st, Cam Archer, Mike Wong, and Ryan Rebar all singled to load the bases. Sam Huston was the next batter for Husson. He popped up to the 2nd baseman who dropped the ball. Archer scored on the error. The miscue gave the Eagles a 1-0 after the 1st inning.

Thomas More would tie things up in the bottom of the 4th inning off of a Joshua Boeckman homerun. It was Boeckman's first homerun of 2017.

In the top of the 5th inning, Husson scored seven runs. Christian Corneil, David Hutchins, Logan Rogerson, and Cam Archer were all credited with an RBI single. Mike Wong drove in the other two RBI on a double. The seventh and final run was scored on a pass ball. Archer was the one who crossed home plate on the catcher's pass ball.

Sean Lawrence and the Saints tried to put together a big inning of their own. Lawrence smashed a three run homerun in the bottom of the 5th inning. Ben Kenning and Ben Laumann scored on the round tripper. Husson led Thomas More 8-4 after five.

Rogerson singled home a run in the top of the 6th inning, while Huston had an RBI single of his own in the top of the 7th. Husson would hold onto the 10-4 lead for the rest of the ball game.

Mike Wong and Logan Rogerson led the Eagles' offense in the win. They combined for five hits and four RBI. Cam Archer, Sam Huston, Christian Corneil, and David Hutchins all chipped in with an RBI. Tommy Burns earned his first win of 2017. Over five innings of work, He struck out six, walked one, and allowed four earned runs. AJ Purcell and Nick Guerette combined for four, one hit innings of relief work.

Sean Lawrence and Joshua Boeckman provided all of the offense for Thomas More. Boeckman hit a solo shot, while Lawrence blasted a three run home run. Jayson Essell took the loss for the Saints. He gave up six runs (four earned) over 4.1 innings while striking out two. Adam Ruwe, Noah Frantz, and Jonathan Breeden combined to give up the other four Husson runs.

The Eagles return to the diamond tomorrow, Thursday, March 9th at 4:00 p.m. against Mitchell in Winter Haven, Florida.
