Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Husson men's basketball (3-0, 1-0 NAC) edged out Thomas College (1-3, 0-1 NAC), 74-59, in their home opener on Tuesday night, grabbing their first conference win.
FIRST GLANCE:
Husson senior guard Raheem Anderson closed out the match on an 11-point streak while shooting 8-8 from the charity stripe.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Within the first two minutes of the match, the Eagles established a lead that the Terriers couldn't surmount. Despite tying up the score three times in the first ten minutes of the match, the Eagles leapt ahead on a 13-3 run (30-20), holding the Terriers to a mere three points over the course of five minutes. In the final ten minutes of the first half, Husson powered up their defense, giving up only six points to extend their lead to 34-23 at the half. Freshman guard DJ Bussey was dominating the floor netting four 3-pointers to add onto his total of 14 points going into halftime.
Husson held Thomas at bay, only allowing the Terriers to creep within seven points of their lead throughout the entire second half. Anderson helped cushion the Eagles lead to a game-high separation of 19 points after draining both shots from the charity stripe followed up with a 3-pointer with 4:02 left on the clock. Freshman guard Demetrius Webster made a late attempt at a comeback draining his only points of the game (six) in the final 1:45 for the Terriers. Closing out the night from the free throw line, Anderson effortlessly putting away 6-6, to help the Eagles down the Terriers 74-59.
LEADERS – HUSSON:
- Junior forward Justin Martin registered the game-high of 17 points, shooting 3-7 from behind the arc.
- Anderson went 9-10 from the free throw line accumulating 16 points while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out five assists.
- Freshman guard Justin Thompson dominated under the boards, picking up seven rebounds.
LEADERS – Thomas:
- Senior center Carlos Gonzalez earned a game-high of 13 boards
- Senior forward John Morgan dropped in 16 points as he went 2-2 from the charity stripe and snatched up eight rebounds
- Freshman guard Justin Butler and junior forward Willie Grant both recorded eight points
TEAM STATS:
Thomas overpowered Husson in rebounds (57-37), but the Eagles posted an advantage in steals (10-3) and nearly broke even in assists (13-12) and blocks (3-2).
