Men's Soccer Completes Perfect Weekend with 6-1 Win Over Johnson

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team won 6-1 against Johnson State on Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-4 (4-2 NAC) while the Badgers drop to 6-6 (1-3 NAC).

Just like in recent games, Husson had a lot of possession in the start of the first half. However, Johnson scored the first goal of the game. The referee awarded the Badgers a penalty in the 22nd minute. Rob Buonanno took the chance and scored. Eight minutes later, a game-changing moment happened. Nick Cosentino got a red card and the Badgers were reduced to ten men. The Eagles took advantage of that straight away.

Only a few seconds after the red card, Miguel Caballero was fouled inside the penalty box and won a penalty. Nathan Firlings scored the penalty and made it 1-1. In the 38th minute, the Eagles scored another goal. Saker Ghanayem found Spencer Miranda outside the box. The latter curled the ball beautifully into the left side of the net. At half time, Husson was up 2-1.

In the second half, the home team came out firing. Saker Ghanayem curled the ball into the top right corner and made it 3-1 after just 15 seconds. Six minutes later, Ghanayem scored again. Miguel Caballero battled with a few Badgers' defenders and was able to find Ghanayem in close range to the goal. The senior made no mistake and struck the ball into the roof of the net. That goal put Husson up 4-1.

The Eagles continued to push forward after that. In the 56th minute, Firlings curled a free kick around the wall and made it 5-1. Just before the goal, Tyler Cirillo got a red card for the Badgers and the away team was reduced to nine men.

With two players more on the field, Husson created chance after chance. In the 75th minute, Josh Bellomo found Jahmal Williams in close proximity to the penalty box. Williams got past a couple of defenders before shooting the ball into the left side of the goal. That goal, which put Husson up 6-1, was the last one of the game.

In the win, the Eagles outshot the Badgers 45-5. Cody Gross made three saves for Husson, while Gerrit Lane made ten saves and Ryan Willette made five saves for Johnson.

"It's hard to say anything negative after scoring 6 and winning the game," said head coach Gavin Penny. "We are certainly improving and working hard, but we have to be better with taking our chances. We are missing goal scoring opportunities time and time again rather than putting teams to bed. I am happy the guys showed a great response in the second half particularly in dealing with players trying to unsettle us. We'll try to fix our troubles and be ready for Tuesday".

On Tuesday, the Eagles travel to Waterville to take on Colby College. That game starts at 4:00 PM.
