Football Shutout Pioneers on Homecoming

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University football team picked up their fourth straight victory on homecoming a 35-0 win over Alfred State College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Winkin Sports Complex.

For the 11th game in a row Husson (2-1) scored the first points of the game on a Cory Brandon 1 yard quarterback sneak with 9:14 left in the first quarter, which capped a five-play, 13 yard drive after the Husson defense forced Alfred State (0-4) to turnover ball on their own 13 yard line when Tarik Smith caused Hezekiah Williams to fumble and Elvin Suazo, Jr. recovered it at the 13.

After a quick three-and-out on the Pioneers next possession, the Eagles gave themselves breathing room when Brandon connected on a 45 yard touchdown pass to Robenson Saintard with 4:43 remaining in the first.

Two Obie Christmas rushing touchdowns in the second, a 12 yarder at 13:34 and a 3 yarder at 7:42 pushed the Eagle to 28 at the half.

Husson received a second half touchdown from Deon Wiggins who caught a 15-yard pass from Brandon in the third.

Leading the way for the Husson defense was Ellis Throckmorton who totaled a team-high seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a half of sack as the Eagles smothered the Pioneers to the tune of just 43 yards of total offense, two net yards rushing, while allowing just 1-yard gained per play. Luke Washburn finished with five tackles and two sacks on the day. Suazo, Jr., DJ Allen and Alonzo Connor each had four tackles.

John Smith carried the ball 30 times for 153 yards to become Husson's all-time career leader in rushing yards. Christmas finished with 48 on eight rushes, while Tyler Bassett and Chuck Browne each had 30 and 22 respectively.

Brandon, Luis Martinez and Parker Asselin combined to connect on 19-of-32 passes for 236 yards to eight different receivers: Saintard (2, 52yds, 1td), Wiggins (4, 35yds, 1td), Kadeem Edge (1, 36yds), Allen (3, 32yds), Kyle Gaudet (2, 26yds), J. Smith (1, 21yds), Jon Saban (3, 20yds) and Andre Miller (3, 13yds).

For the Pioneers, Josh Ashley gained 22 yards receiving while Dashown Wilson rushed for 20 yards on four carries. Steven Hubick and Brandon Davis both recorded 13 tackles on the day while Michael Zimmerman chipped in 10.
