Eagles Split With Pilgrims on Senior Day, 4-6, 3-1

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with New England College (NEC) on Sunday afternoon at Harold Alfond Diamond at Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles fell to the Pilgrims in game one, 6-4, and took the night cap, 3-1.

In a pregame ceremony senior's JT Whitten, Dan Whitney, Andrew Curran, Zach Sugar, Julien Boone, Darik Messier and Brandon Reilly were all recognized for their contributions to the Husson baseball program.

GAME 1: NEC 6, Husson 4

Whitten's double to right field drove in Whitney with one out in the first while Boone's triple down the leftfield line in the third gave Husson (20-19, 15-9 NAC) the 2-0 lead.

New England College (7-25, 6-18 NAC) tied the game at two with an RBI double by Jeam Deleon and a Michael Young groundout in the fourth but the Eagles responded right back with two in the bottom half of inning on back-to-back hits by Cam Archer and Whitney to regain the lead.

The Pilgrims then rallied to score two runs in the fifth tying the game at four on an RBI groundout by Lonnie Cohen and a wild pitch and took the lead in the seventh on a RBI triple by Cohen. NEC added an insurance run when Cohen scored on a Vincent Backert single up the middle making the game, 6-4.

Boone and Whitney led the Eagles with two hits and a RBI. Whitney, Ryan Rebar, Whitten and Archer had a double while Boone recorded a triple. Tommy Burns started the game allowing four runs (one earned with a walk and two punch-outs over the first five innings of game. Steven Hanscom (0-2) took the lost after yielding three hits, two earned runs and a walk over one inning plus.

Backert was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Deleon went 2-for-4 with RBI and two doubles for the Pilgrims while Cohen added a triple. Backert (4-2) picked up his fourth win on the season after allowing four runs (three earned) off nine Eagle hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

GAME 2: Husson 3, NEC 1

NEC took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Young scored on a throwing error by starting pitcher Ryan Allender (2-2) off a sacrifice bunt by Brendan Holloran.

The Eagles responded with a two-run rally in the bottom of the first to take the lead when Mike Wong singled up the middle plating Rebar to put Husson on the board and scored on Sam Huston two-out single through the left side for a 2-1 advantage.

Husson added an insurance run in the fourth off a RBI triple down the right field line by Christian Corneil and Austin Smith (1) shut down the Pilgrims in the seventh for the 3-1 victory.

For the Eagles, Sam Huston was 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a two-bagger. Corneil, Conor Maguire, Wong and Rebar each had a hit in the victory, while Corneil added a triple to the offensive. Allender picked up the win after allowing just one hit and one unearned run in 5.0 innings while walking three and fanning three. AJ Purcell pitched a clean sixth with a walk before turning the ball over to Smith who allowed two hits with a strikeout in one inning of work to earn his first collegiate save.

Young, Zach Nolan and Jack Dotson each had a hit for the Pilgrims in the setback. Manuel Alejandro (1-5) took the loss after yielding three runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks while fanning three in 6.0 innings.

The Eagles will close out the regular season on Tuesday when they host Colby College under the lights for a single nine inning non conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. This concludes the 2016 season for New England College.
