Football Wins Second Straight ECFC Contest Over Gallaudet

Bangor, Maine - Cory Brandon's first career 200 yard passing game to help propel Husson University to a 50-16 victory over Gallaudet University in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) action on Saturday afternoon at Winkin Sports Complex.

Husson (4-1, 2-0 ECFC) picks up their 15th ECFC win in their last 16 conference games, while Gallaudet (1-4, 0-2 ECFC) loses its third-consecutive game to the Eagles. The Bison lead the all-time series 5-4.

The Eagles struck first for the 13th game in a row when John Smith punched in his 40th career rushing touchdown two yards out capping off a 10 play, 67 yard drive with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter.

On the following kickoff, Husson got the ball right back as the return was fumbled when Charlie Meli forced Sean Fenton to cough up the ball, which was recovered by Rick Orio at the Gallaudet 24 yard line. Five plays later Obie Christmas mulled his way in for his fourth touchdown on the season extending the Eagle to 14-0 going into the second quarter.

The Bison would officially end the Eagles shutout streak at home when Carneilus Smith intercepted a Brandon pass and return it 98 yards to the house 14 seconds into the 2nd quarter and Kahan Loussaint two-point rush attempt was good trimming the Husson lead to 14-8.

Both teams punted on their next possessions, giving Husson the ball back at their own 41 yard line. After a 2-yard run by Christmas, a Brandon incomplete pass to Deon Wiggins, an 11-yard pass from Brandon to Wiggins, a Christmas rush for 7 yards and a 10 yard holding penalty, Brandon found a wide open Robenson Saintard for a 48 yard touchdown pass and a Brandon two-point pass attempt to Wiggins was good giving Husson a 22-8 lead with 9:47 remaining in the first half.

On the Bison's next possession, Jean Gabriel gave the Eagles their first pick six of the season when he returned a Timel Benton pass 21 yards as the Eagles led 29-8 at the 7:37 mark of the 2nd.

After a quick three-and-out on the Bison next possession, the Eagles gave themselves breathing room when Brandon found Kadeem Edge for his second 40 plus yard touchdown pass of the quarter at 4:11 pushing the Eagle lead to 36-8.

Taking over at the Husson 37-yard line after another three-and-out by the Bison, the Eagles needed just five plays to found the end zone once again as Brandon connected on his third touchdown pass of the quarter to Saintard this time for a 14-yarder as Husson headed into intermission with a 43-8 lead.

Husson scored on the their first possession of the third quarter on the opening drive of second half when Christmas once again found the end zone one yard out to take a 50-8 lead.

The Gallaudet defense forced the Eagles to turn over the ball on downs and the very next play Antoine McKinney completed a 92-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Watson and Tarik Wallace two-point rush attempt was good to give the Bison 16 points.

Husson ran the clock out on the last drive to close out the 50-16 victory over Gallaudet.

Brandon connected on 11-of-17 passes for 210 yards with three touchdowns and a pick, while Luis Martinez, Parker Asselin, Levi Craig and Jake Jarvis combined to connect on 3-of-7 passes for 18 yards and pick. The five quarterbacks threw passes to five different receivers Edge (5, 98yds, 1td), Saintard (2, 62, 2td), Wiggins (3, 33yds), Andre Miller (2, 23yds) and Kyle Gaudet (2, 12yds).

The Eagles racked up 263 rushing yards behind a combined rushing attack of Chuck Browne (12, 74yds), J. Smith (11, 52yds, 1td), Saintard (5, 46yds), Christmas (14, 45yds), Martinez (4, 26yds), Bryan Cedeno (3, 11yds), Tyler Bassett (2, 8yds), Keyshaun Robinson (1, 8yds), Devin Wright (1, 6yds) and Justin Johnson (1, 2yds).

Leading the way for the Husson defense was Charlie Meli who recorded a team-high six tackles and one forced fumble helping the Eagles limit Gallaudet to 20 rushing yards, six first downs, while forcing four turnovers and holding them to 0-for-10 on third down. Logan Steward chipped in five tackles and a tackle for loss, while Ellis Throckmorton and Luke Washburn each added four tackles. Alonzo Connor and Marcus Fuller each contributed a sack and Alphonso Belnavis added an interception.

For the Bison, Benton and McKinney combined to connect on 2-of-9 passes for 98 yards with a touchdown and two picks. Spencer Maples rushed five times for 29 yards. Watson caught both passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. C. Smith, Louie Akuffo and Sean Fenton recorded 12, 11 and 10 tackles respectively.

Husson will hit the road once again on Saturday, Oct. 15 for a crucial ECFC matchup at Castleton beginning at 1 p.m. The Spartans are the only other team in the ECFC with a 2-0 conference mark after defeating Mount Ida on the road Saturday, 26-14.

Gallaudet returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host Mount Ida for a 12 p.m. ECFC game.
