Field Hockey Drops NAC East Championship Game to UMF in Double Overtime, 1-0

Box Score

FARMINGTON, Maine - University of Maine at Farmington field hockey (12-4-0) scored at 10:45 of the second overtime to defeat Husson University (8-7-0) in the North Atlantic Conference East Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

UMF sophomore forward Andrea Stemm (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) scored from the top of the circle on a shot that deflected off Husson goalie Anne Marie Provencal.  The goal came off a penalty corner and ended the evenly matched championship.

In the first half, UMF outshot Husson 11-4, but it was Husson that had a great opportunity.  Coming off back to back penalty corners in the 15th minute, the Eagles were able to work the ball to an open Arika Brochu in the circle. Brochu fired a shot on goal and UMF goalie Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) made a great kick save to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.

In most of the regulation and the first overtime, Husson and UMaine-Farmington had numerous scoring chances but the game remained scoreless.

In the overtimes, it was the play of  Lee-Anne Greenleaf (Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner) on defense that made the biggest difference.  With Husson substituting regularly to keep fresh players in the seven on seven format, it was Greenleaf that made it difficult for the Eagles to attack the cage and setting the stage for Stemm's game winner.

UMF defender Lee-Anne Greenleaf was named the Most Valuable Player and she is joined on the all-tournament team with her teammates Emmah Spahr, Patty Smith, Torrie Nightingale, and Andrea Stemm; Husson's Taylor Lovely, Kerianne Downing, and Anne Marie Provencal ; Thomas's Katie Taylor, and Abigail Dunn; and Colby-Sawyer's Jordan Teixeira and Kaylin Lapham.

UMaine-Farmington will advance to the crossover championship against Wells on November 5th at Castleton.
