Eagles Drop Naismith Classic Championship Game to Bates, 93-74

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bates men's basketball team scored a season-high 93 points, and Malcolm Delpeche grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to help propel the Bobcats past Husson, 93-74, to win the Naismith Classic on Sunday night.

Husson (6-3) drops their second game on the season to the Bobcats, while Bates (7-5) win its fifth consecutive game over the Eagles and holds a 12-5 advantage in the all-series.

The Eagles lead 16-14 midway through the first half before Mike Boornazian buried a three to give the Bobcats the lead for good with 10:53 to go in the half. Bates controlled the remainder of the first half, taking a 10-point lead into halftime.

Raheem Anderson and Trevon Butler did their best to keep Husson in it but the Eagles never got closer than to within eight points in the second half as Bates tallied 48 points in the half to get to 93 on the night.

Shawn Strickland scored 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for Bates. His 17 points matched Boornazian for the team-high on the evening. Delpeche hauled in a remarkable 17 rebounds, 13 on the defensive glass for the Bobcats.

Anderson led all scorers with 21 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Butler added 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Zach Curran contributed 14 points for the Eagles.

Anderson and Butler were named to the All-Tournament team with Robinson Vilmont from Brandeis, Josh Altman from Springfield and Boornazian and Strickland from Bates. Strickland was named tournament MVP.

The Eagles return to the court on Saturday, January 6 when they travel down to Castine to face the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy for a 3:00 p.m. North Atlantic Conference game, while the Bobcats host NESCAC and in state rival Colby on Friday, January 5th for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
