VB: Eagles move to 2-0, defeat Maine-Presque Isle

BANGOR, Maine - Bailey Cote posted a match-high 10 kills and hit .692, leading the Eagles to a 3-0 win over Maine-Presque Isle on Friday, the first day of the second annual Husson Invitational, inside Newman Gymnasium. The Eagles have yet to lose a game this season.

After giving up the first point of game one, Husson (2-0) scored eight straight and never looked back. Maine-Presque Isle (0-1) did not help its cause, committing three-straight attack errors in falling behind by seven. A service ace by Marissa Johnson gave the Eagles a 16-4 edge. After trading points, coach Jodie Fairbank's squad rallied off another 8-0 run, which included three Cote kills and concluded with a bad set by Hannah Williams, to close the game.

Two service aces by Lindsay Chapman helped give the Eagles a 5-0 lead in set two. A Chapman kill later gave the Green and Gold a 13-6 upper hand. Back-to-back attack errors by Husson brought the Owls within five points at 16-11, but the Eagles answered with a 6-0 spurt to pull away. An Emma Plouffe kill and bad set by Morgan Swan ended the game.

Maine-Presque Isle scored three of the first four points in game three, but Husson scored seven of the next 10 to grab a lead it would not relinquish. A 5-0 run midway through the set stretched a four-point Eagles' advantage to nine, as a service ace by Nia Arranaga made the score 19-10. Leading 20-14, Husson closed the match on a 5-1 run, with ended with a Johnson service ace.

Sarah Wilson finished with 14 digs, while Chapman posted 10. Arranga dished out 12 assists, while Johnson had 10. Plouffe and Shannon Tallon each had two block assists.

Chapman and Johnson each pumped in four service aces. Cote and Arranga had two apiece.

Abby Jewett had a team-high four kills in the loss.

The Eagles battle Maine-Fort Kent at 10 a.m. ET and Unity (Maine) at noon on Saturday to conclude the pool play portion of the Husson Invitational. The consolation and championship games of the tournament start at 2 p.m.
