BANGOR, Maine - Sarah Wilson set a new Husson three-game match record with 27 digs on Tuesday evening, leading the Eagles to a 3-0 win over Maine-Machias by scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-18. The Eagles win their third-straight match against the Clippers.
Wilson broke Lindsay Chapman's previous three-game mark of 24, set in 2013 against Castleton (Vt.)
Husson (6-10) scored seven of the first nine points of game one, including two Bailey Cote service aces. An Emma Plouffe service ace later made the score 16-7 in favor of the Eagles. Consecutive service aces by Caela Fenderson gave Husson a 22-10 edge, and an attack error by Delaney Gardner ended up giving the Eagles a 12-point set win.
Maine-Machias (4-7) gained its first lead in the match after scoring the first point of game two, but with the set tied at two, a 4-0 Husson run, including two Cote service aces, put the Eagles ahead for good. Two Marissa Johnson service aces coupled with a Cote kill pushed the margin to six at 14-8. Later, after allowing three-straight Maine-Machias points, the Eagles responded with a 7-0 spurt, which included two Chapman service aces, to finish off the set, as Kaitlyn Woods blocked an attack by Gardner to put the Eagles up in the match 2-0.
Maine Machias took a 3-0 lead in game three and led 5-2 after a Husson service error, but the Eagles answered with four-straight points to take a 6-5 edge. Husson and Maine-Machias traded the next four points before a Woods' kill put coach Jodie Fairbank's team in the lead for good. An 8-1 run midway through the set, concluding with a Wilson service ace, made the score 14-8. The Clippers closed within four as late as 21-17 on a Husson service error, but the Eagles rallied with four of the final five points, as a Cote spike ended the match.
Chapman finished with match-highs in kills (6) and service aces (5), as the Eagles rolled up 19. Johnson dished out 24 assists to go along with eight digs.
Gardner and Morgan each had five kills in the loss. Britnie Holmes, Savannah Hayden and Frankie Couture recorded 12 digs apiece. Hayden also had 13 assists for a double-double performance.
Husson travels to Plymouth State (N.H.) for a tri-match Saturday. The Eagles face Rhode Island College at 1:30 p.m. ET before tangling with the Panthers at 3 p.m.
