Young leads Eagles Past Mariners, 72-60

BANGOR, Maine – Rebecca Young scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Eagles to a 72-60 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon in Newman Gym.

Husson (2-1, 2-0 NAC) wins its second-straight game, while Maine Maritime (2-3, 1-1 NAC) loses its fourth-consecutive game to the Eagles. The all-time series is now tied at 14-14.

The Eagles started the game on a 14-4 run but a three by Mackenzie Vosburgh closed the lead to 14-7 with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter, sparking a 6-4 Maine Maritime run as Husson took a 18-11 lead into the second quarter. Young contributed six points, one board and one steal, Chandler Guerrette chipped in with five points and two steals.

The Mariners put together a 10-5 run in the second quarter to close Husson's lead to 25-21, forcing the hosts to call a timeout. The Eagles came out of the timeout with eight-straight points from a jump-shot by Young, a 3-point shot by Guerrette and a 3-point and jump shots from Kenzie Worcester before the Mariners could find their offensive rhythm, and Husson took a 35-25 lead into the intermission. Worcester and Guerrette led all scorers in the quarter with five points each.

Guerrette led the Eagles in the first two quarters with ten points, and three steals, while Young charted eight points and Worcester added seven points.

In the first two quarters, Kristi Willey and Alayne Felix led the Mariners with six points each, while Willey led all players in the first half with five boards.

The Mariners opened up the third quarter with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three from Mikayla Charters, to close the gap to 35-32, but the Eagles answered with seven-straight points from Worcester and Joan Overman to make it 42-32.

With a little over a minute remaining in the third quarter, Tess Clark made a jump shot to bring the Mariners within seven, but the Eagles closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 53-43 lead into the final quarter. Felix and Young led all scorers in the quarter with six points each, while Overman added five points off the bench for Eagles.

A Felix jumper closed Husson's lead to seven with 2:36 remaining in the game, but the Mariners could not come back from the deficit as the Eagles closed out the game with a 6-1 run to secure the 72-60 victory in the 28th matchup between the two schools. Felix and Charters led all scorers in the quarter with six points each, while Darla Morales chipped in with a team-high five points.

The Eagles' defense forced 31 Maine Maritime turnovers in the victory.

Young added four rebounds, one steal, one assist and one block, while Worcester added 13 points, four rebounds, and a game-high four steals and Victoria McIntyre and Morales each contributed 11 points.

Felix led the Mariners with 18 points, and a game-high seven rebounds, while Charters added 13 points.

The Eagles will return the court on Friday, December 11th when they host Colby-Sawyer in a NAC matchup at 5:30 p.m. and the Mariners will be back in action on Tuesday, December 8th when they host Daniel Webster for a non-conference matchup at 5:30 p.m.
