Box Score BANGOR, ME – Phil Frost's (Bangor, ME) goal in the 57th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Husson University men's soccer team defeated Southern Maine 3-1 in the second game of the third annual Husson Challenge Cup. Husson improves to 2-1-0 on the year while Southern Maine falls to 0-3-0.
Husson took the lead in the 26
th minute, when
Stephen Berenyi (Levant, ME) hit a cross to
Cam Libbey ((Hampden, ME) who hit a shot to the lower right corner for the first goal of the contest.
In the 57
th minute,
Josh Bean (Ellsworth, ME) threw the ball in and Frost flicked the ball with his head over the Huskies' goalkeeper into the right corner.
Southern Maine cut the lead in half in the 71st minute when Tyler Rand converted a penalty kick, but Michael Curtis (Ellsworth, ME) sealed the game for the Eagles when he headed home a free kick from Nic Pare (Keene, NH) in the 89th minute.
"This is a great win in our home-opener," said Husson head coach Jeff Gettler. "The team played ok despite not being able to settle down and play the way I would like us to. We didn't apply pressure like we should and we can't afford this tough of a game tomorrow. But we're happy with the win and hope to win the Championship tomorrow."
Husson outshot Southern Maine 18-11. The Eagles take on Gordon at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) made five stops for the Eagles while improving his record to 2-1-0. Elijah Leverett made seven saves for the Huskies and his record fell to 0-2-0.
In the first game between Gordon and Maine Maritime Academy, a Ben Gradert header in the 54th minute from Andy Guthrie proved to be the game-winner as Gordon won 1-0.
Josh Spoonhour made a pair of saves for Gordon to earn the shutout while Marshall Spear made four saves for Maine Maritime. Gordon is now 2-0-0 on the season while Maine Maritime falls to 0-3-0. Gordon outshot Maine Maritime 19-5.
Maine Maritime plays Southern Maine at 5 p.m. Saturday.
