Men's Soccer Shuts Down St. Joseph's, 2-0

Box Score

Standish, ME – Husson University (3-3-0) topped Saint Joseph's College (1-7-0), 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Westerlea Way Field on Sunday afternoon.

The dominant effort from the visitors started early in the contest as the Eagles scored twice, with the tallies coming exactly two minutes apart, in the first third of the opening half. Junior forward Phil Frost (Bangor, Maine) struck first off a Stephen Berenyi (Levant, Maine) feed at the 11:20 mark and sophomore midfielder Josh Bean (Ellsworth, Maine) potted his first goal of the season two minutes later to put the visitors up by two for good, as it played out.

Husson owned an 18-14 advantage in shots while Saint Joseph's posted a 5-2 lead in corner kicks on the afternoon. Junior keeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) made six saves with two goals allowed in the first half while first-year Hugo Palacios (Revere, Mass.) tallied three saves after entering the game at halftime. Husson senior netminder Brian Potter (Waterville, Maine) registered three saves in the shutout effort.

"I'm very pleased with how we played--we got two goals and a shut out on the road," said Husson head coach Jeff Gettler. "Potter was fantastic for us, and this result was positive as we look towards the start of league play at home next weekend."

With the setback, Saint Joseph's falls to 3-20 in the history of the series with Husson University, a side that edged the Monks by a 2-1 margin in the last meeting between the in-state rivals – a match that took place in Bangor on September 12th, 2010.

The Monks begin a four-game road swing with a non-conference contest at University of New England starting at 6:00 PM on Wednesday. The Eagles next open North Atlantic Conference play as they host Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
