Foster, Reilly, McEwen Lead Husson Baseball to Sweep of NEC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bangor, ME -  The Husson University baseball team used dominant pitching, timely hitting, and sound defense to sweep a doubleheader from the New England College Pilgrims on Saturday afternoon.

Husson's starting pitchers Brandon Reilly and Pat McEwen each threw complete-game four-hit shutouts, while Dylan Foster went 6-for-7 with two triples, three RBI and three runs scored between the two contests.

Husson improves to 7-7 overall with the victories, and more importantly they move to 4-3 in North Atlantic Conference play.  NEC falls to 2-7 overall, and 0-2 in the NAC.

Game 1: Husson 7, NEC 0

In game one, Husson sophomore right-hander Brandon Reilly (Pemaquid, ME) stifled the Pilgrims all game long, throwing a complete-game shutout while allowing just four hits.  Reilly threw 64 of his 102 pitches for strikes, and the four hits he gave up were all singles.  He struck out five, and walked three in the seven innings.

Eagles' center fielder Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) led the offensive output in game one, going 3-for-3 with an RBI triple and two singles.  Foster scored three runs from the leadoff spot in the order, stole a base, and was also intentionally walked in his third at-bat.

First baseman J.T. Whitten (Waterville, ME) blasted an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that plated Foster to open up the scoring for the Eagles.  Brandon Gendreau (Brewer, ME) added an RBI double in the third inning, while Ben McLain (Pemaquid, ME) laced an RBI triple in the fifth and Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, ME) produced a two-run single in the sixth.

Husson's shortstop Cody McInnis (Bangor, ME) didn't have a flashy stat-line, going 0-for-1 with two walks, but he came around to score two runs and made NEC starter Eric Johnson throw a high amount of pitches by working the count out of the number nine spot in the Eagles' batting order.

Johnson threw all six innings for the Pilgrims, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.  Chris Smith, Jordan Hubbard, Vincent Backert, and Scott Fortune all singled for NEC in the loss.

Game 2: Husson 3, NEC 0

In game two, Husson senior right-hander Pat McEwen (Brewer, ME) matched Reilly's performance from game one by firing a four-hit complete-game shutout of his own.  McEwen was unbelievably efficient, needing just 74 pitches (47 strikes) to get through the seven innings.  He walked only one batter, and sat five down via strikeouts.  Also like Reilly in game one, the four hits McEwen gave up were all singles.

Foster would continue his great day for the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBI singles in the second game.  He broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning by driving in McInnis who had reached on a base on balls.  Foster also added an insurance run in the sixth inning with another RBI base-hit that drove in Andrew Curran (Hampstead, NH).

Meehan picked up his third RBI of the doubleheader with a run-scoring single in the fifth as well, while McInnis again was productive out of the ninth spot with two walks, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Pilgrims' left-handed starter Chris Smith gave up just two hits in the first 4.1 innings before the Eagles were able to get to him.  Smith wound up going six innings, giving up three runs (all earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks.  Brandon Adorno, Eric Johnson, Francesco DiRe, and Stanley Petteway all notched singles in the loss for NEC.

The Eagles and the Pilgrims will meet for another North Atlantic Conference doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday, April 6) at the Harold Alfond Diamond at the John Winkin Complex of Husson University.  Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
