Box Score 1 Bangor, ME - A complete venue and schedule change opened up the 2014 North Atlantic Conference schedule for Husson baseball Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex. The Eagles fell in three tough contests to the Spartans of Castleton to open their 2014 NAC campaign. Minus the first inning of game one, Castleton used tough pitching and near-perfect defense to defeat the Eagles.
Game 1
Husson came out firing in game one, scoring two runs before Castleton could record an out. Cody McInnis walked to lead off the game and scored when Dylan Foster hit and infield single, and the shortstop's throw sailed over first base. As Foster reached third the subsequent throw sailed high again, allowing the Husson center fielder to score as well.
The Spartans tied it up moments later, however, as Allen White and Joe Borowski scored on a fielder's choice and a single to center.
Castleton added to their lead in the third on a Nate Swahn single through the left side scoring Matt McNamee to make it 3-2.
Husson regained the lead in the fourth when Dennis Meehan homered to left to tie the game and Seth Freudenberger scored on a Cody McInnis single up the middle. Husson now led 4-3.
The lead was short-lived yet again for the Eagles. Castleton put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth on two singles and a sac fly. The five runs were last either team would score all game and the Spartans won 8-4.
Brandon Reilly was charged with the loss in 3.1innings for Husson while Steven Jerkiewicz picked up the win in five innings.
Game 2
Game two was more a pitcher's duel, featuring Pat McEwen of Husson and Sam Spencer of Castleton. Both pitchers went the distance and only allowed a combined five hits and six runs.
The bulk of the Spartan Damage came off the bat of Joe Borowski who homered to left center, plating three. Dan Errico came up next and shot one over the fence to go back-to-back for the home team on the road. Borowski had three RBI for the Spartans while Errico plated the other two.
Brandon Gendreau added the lone run and hit on a bomb of his own to left that sent Macyn Clifford through the temporary fencing due to excess snow on the warning track.
Castleton won by a final of 5-1.
Game 3
It wasn't until the third inning in game three that either team broke the scoreless tie. Castleton took a 1-0 lead when Allen White singled the right scoring Soren Pelz-Walsh. Walsh entered the action in game two and started game three after shortstop Tyler Hoare left with an apparent hamstring injury.
The Spartans put up four more in the fourth, starting off with a single by Pelz-Walsh to score Chaz Millet and Taylor Vile singled to right moments later and scored Pelz-Walsh. Allen White joined the party again for Castleton in the fourth, doubling to left center to score Tyler Lord and Vile.
Husson wouldn't go quietly, however, adding two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Darik Messier put a deep double over the head of the center fielder to score Dylan Foster and Messier scored later in the inning on a Dan Whitney line drive up the middle.
Dennis O'Neil picked up the loss for Husson to fall to 1-1 while Adam Geenlease threw 5.2 innings of five-hit, two-run ball while striking out 6. Husson's Zach Yates pitched the final defensive inning for Husson, giving up a run on a hit and a walk while sitting down two by way of the K.
