Box Score 2 Winter Haven, FL - Husson University baseball (3-4) closed out its Florida trip with a doubleheader against the Suffolk University Rams on Friday afternoon. The Eagles dropped a 1-0 result in the first game and took the Rams to extra innings in the second before falling 4-3 in the tenth inning.
Game 1: Husson 0 - Suffolk 1
Suffolk's Jake Cintolo scored the only run of the game in the top of the sixth off a Husson error on a single from Mike Muse. Husson's Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, ME) went 2-for-3. Brandon Reilly (Pemaquid, ME) pitched the first six innings for the Eagles, facing 25 batters and giving up six hits and one run. Zachary Yates (Newport, RI) closed out the game for Husson, throwing 16 pitches and giving up one hit.
For the Rams, Josh Desai pitched a complete, four hit game. Desai would manage to escape a bases loaded jam with two outs in the third and also got out of a jam in the seventh as the Eagles put the tying run on first with one out in the inning but were unable to get into scoring position.
Game 2: Husson 3 - Suffolk 4 (10 Innings)
Suffolk took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Luke Ronchi scored an unearned run off a wild pitch. Husson responded with two runs in the top of the fourth, as J.T. Whitten (Waterville, ME) and Dylan Foster (Oakland, ME) scored off a double from Josh Gaudette (Waterville, ME). The Eagles' lead was short-lived, as a Jon Lapolla homerun for Suffolk sent Matt Brenner across the plate and gave the Rams a 3-2 lead.
Husson's Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, ME) tied it up in the top of the seventh, as Thibodeau got an RBI on a fielder's choice. Meehan's run would prove enough to send the game into extra innings, and it wasn't until the tenth inning that Rob Marks would close out the victory for the Rams off a Ronchi fly ball.
Dan Whitney (Bethel, ME) pitched seven innings for Husson, facing 31 batters on 100 pitches and giving up one hit and three runs. Yates took over in the eighth inning and faced 12 batters, giving up three hits and a run. Meehan closed out the game for the Eagles, facing three batters in the bottom of the tenth.
For Suffolk, Frank Tierney pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief of Eli Libby, who was the game two starter. Libby was charged with three runs as he only allowed four hits through the first 6 1/3 innings.
Husson will be back in action on Sunday, March 23, as the team hosts Bates for its home opener in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 12 PM.
