Box Score Bangor, ME – Husson University women's basketball hosted the University of Maine at Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match-up on Wednesday night at Newman Gymnasium. The Eagles (13-11, 12-5 NAC) overcame the Beavers (9-15, 8-9 NAC), 88-78. Before the game, Husson honored the team's lone senior Gab Duke (Rockport, ME) for her four years with the Eagles.
For the first five minutes, the teams went basket-for-basket, with Farmington gaining a slight 14-9 advantage. At 16-16, the Eagles tied it up, and they did so again at 19-19. Two free throws from first year Chandler Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME) got the Eagles the lead at 21-19. The teams stayed within a basket or two of each other for the remainder of the half and headed into the locker room with Husson leading 45-42.
Guerrette led the Eagles through the first half with 14 points, and Rebecca Young (Concord, VT) added 8 more. Kathryn Brochu (Bangor, ME) grabbed four first half rebounds, and Guerrette dished out four assists.
Lindsay Ranquist (Owls Head, ME) led the Beavers with 10 first half points, and her teammate Elizabeth Ferry (Winslow, ME) added 8. Ayla Allen (Mexico, ME) got four rebounds.
Husson jumped out to a 50-44 lead at the start of the second half before Farmington fought back to 53-53. The teams kept it close again for the next few minutes, and then a string of free throws from Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, ME), Denae Johnson (Bangor, ME), and McIntyre again put Husson up 67-60 with just under 10 minutes remaining. A jumper from Brochu extended the Husson lead to nine, and another jumper from her kept it there at 71-62 after Farmington's Bridget Humphrey (Jefferson, ME) scored one of her own.
UMF closed the gap to five points off another Humphrey basket and got within three off a Meghan Smith (Boothbay, ME) jumper. Husson's Guerrette sunk a big three to extend the Eagles' lead again. Husson hung on to the lead with some stellar team play and found themselves up 81-72 with two minutes left on the clock. UMF brought it within five points with just under a minute remaining, but it wasn't enough for the Beavers as the Eagles closed out the win, 88-78.
Guerrette closed out the game with a career-high 30 points for Husson, and she also had a team-high five assists and four steals. Young and McIntyre each scored 12 points for the Eagles and Brochu added 10. Denae Johnson had a team-leading seven rebounds.
Smith was the leading scorer for UMF with 19 points on the night, and Ranquist was right behind her with 18. Ferry scored 12 for the Beavers and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
UMF will close out the regular season when they host Maine Maritime on Saturday. Husson will travel to Thomas College for a 1 PM game on Saturday.
