Box Score Bangor, ME - Husson men's basketball (21-2, 15-1 NAC) grabbed a North Atlantic Conference win over Johnson State (6-17, 3-13 NAC) on Saturday evening. With the win, the team's 21st of the season, Husson concluded a perfect conference weekend at home.
Before the game, Husson honored its six seniors: Corey Wood, Brooks Spaulding, Phil Leighton, Mike Gonzales, Dan Fleming, and Donte Cottonham.
The game started close, as Johnson stayed within reach of Husson with a score of 20-14 in favor of the Eagles with 10 to play in the first half. From there, the Eagles started to pull away and increased their lead to 47-26 heading into the half. Trevon Butler (Waterbury, CT) and Phil Leighton (Naples, ME) each put up 10 first half points for Husson. Aaron Willis (New York, NY) added 8 first half points, and Brooks Spaulding grabbed 6 rebounds. Husson shot 45.9 percent from the field to just 34.6 percent from Johnson State, and the Eagles grabbed 9 steals to the Badgers' two.
Johnson State outscored Husson 10-5 in the first minutes of the second half, but Husson responded by pulling away to a 29 point lead with just over 11 minutes left on the clock. Johnson fought back to within 18 with under five minutes to go, but the Eagles closed out the game with a 86-69 victory.
Butler tied for a game-high 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Mike Gonzales (Fort Washington, MD), Leighton, Willis, and Donte Cottonham (Silver Spring, MD) all scored in double figures for Husson, as well. Spaulding ended up with a team-high 9 rebounds, and Dan Fleming (Fairfield, ME) grabbed 8.
For the Badgers, Josh Reed (Sycamore, IL) tied for a game-high 16 points. Ron Adrian (Schenectady, NY) added 14 points of his own. Cory Chase (Milton, VT) came away with a game-high 10 rebounds, and teammate Brian Hickey (Barre, VT) grabbed 7 more. Johnson vastly improved its shooting percentage from the field in the second half, going 51.6 percent.
Johnson State will next travel to New England College for a Thursday, February 20 game. Husson will host Maine-Farmington at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, February 19 as a "Gold Rush" event.
