CHAMPIONS! Field Hockey Defeats Maine-Farmington in Two Overtimes to Capture NAC Title

Box Score

BANGOR, ME – Britt Mellor's (Belfast, ME) goal with 3:25 left in the second overtime propelled the Husson University field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Maine-Farmington and the North Atlantic Conference championship. Husson's record goes to 9-8 while Maine-Farmington ends its season at 8-7.

"We had a great offensive effort, but struggled to find the back of the net," said Husson head coach Madeline Hoeppner. "Patty Smith played incredibly well in net for Maine-Farmington and we had to work very hard to score. We were fortunate that our girls are in peak condition and we didn't have to substitute very much. They deserve every moment of their success."

In the second overtime, Hanna Jordan (Lisbon Falls, ME) was dribbling along the right side and took a shot that went to the right of the goalie. The ball went straight to Mellor who buried it to set off a championship-winning celebration.

The Eagles had a decided advantage in shots (67-2), and set the school record with 31 corners, but Smith made an impressive 30 saves to keep it scoreless.

The Beavers had a chance to score midway through the second half, but Husson goalie Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, RI) made a fantastic save to preserve the shutout.

Husson defender Annika Durrell (Livermore, ME) was named Most Valuable Player as she and All-Tournament honoree Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, MA) played shut down on defense the entire game.

Joining Souza on the All-Tournament team were: Husson's Libby Kain (Dexter, ME), Taylor Lovley (Newport, ME) and Mikayla Toth (Skowhegan, ME); Maine-Farmington's Chelsea Morley, Meghan Plant and Meghan Hughes; Castleton's Kristy Pinkham and Karissa Premo; and Thomas' Brittany Premo and Erin Nelligan.

Husson advances to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time, and first since 2011.
