CHAMPIONS! Football Wins First ECFC Title!

Newton, MA - The Husson University football team won its first ECFC Championship and NCAA berth with a 41-21 win over Mount Ida on Saturday afternoon. Husson wins its eighth straight game and goes to 8-1 on the year and 7-0 in league play while Mount Ida falls to 5-5 and 5-2 in league play. 

Joe Seccarecia (Bangor, ME) threw for 206 yards and threw touchdown scores to Josiah Hartley (Bangor, ME) (14 yards), Ryan Stroud (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) (32 yards) and Deon Wiggins (Waterbury, CT) (32, 10 and 27 yards). John Smith (Fayetville, GA) rushed for 158 yards and a score and Kenny Sweet (Portland, ME) made 12 tackles and an interception to lead the defense. 

Husson took a 13-6 lead into halftime with scores from Hartley and Seccareccia before Wiggins notched his three scores in the third and early fourth quarters, with the last coming with under 12 minutes left in the contest to put the Eagles up 35-13. Smith completed the scoring with under three minutes left. 

Wiggins finished with seven catches for 113 yards as Husson racked up 400 yards of offense while limiting Mount Ida to 273 yards. 

Matt Greenman had 111 yards receiving and two scores for Mount Ida. 

The Eagles will learn their opponent for the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 6 p.m. 

Notes...Seccareccia broke the record for most touchdown throws in a game while Wiggins set the record for touchdown catches...Seccareccia also set the record for touchdwons in a season...Smith set the first year record for rushing scores...It was Husson's first win over Ida since 2008...Husson plays in its first postseason since its 2008 bowl appearance.
