Men's Soccer's Season Ends in First Round of NCAA Tournament

Box Score

Waltham, MA - Husson University men's soccer saw their 2014 campaign come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament against Brandeis University on Saturday evening. The Eagles (13-8) fell 3-0 to the hosts, Brandeis (18-2).

Brandeis started the game with an early goal, scoring on their second shot of the game. Senior forward Tyler Savonen (Orleans, MA) dribbled down the field through the defense before playing through to classmate Michael Soboff (Framingham, MA). Soboff turned and ripped a shot into the middle of the net past Husson senior Brian Potter (Waterville, ME).

The Judges added a second goal right before the break. With under a minute to go, senior back Robbie Lynch (Weymouth, MA) dribbled along the perimeter of the 18-yard box before finding Picard, who blasted a shot that went past a screened Potter inside the near left post to give the Judges some breathing room headed into the intermission. Picard would add a second goal in the 80th minute, when he deflected home rookie Brandon Miskin's (Needham, MA) corner kick with his hip.

For the game, Brandeis outshot Husson, 29-5, including 13-1 in shots on goal. Potter made 10 saves, including a few acrobatic stops in each half to keep the Eagles in the game. Brandeis senior Joe Graffy (Concord, NH) had one stop in the first half on Husson's Cam Libbey (Hampden, ME).

Husson head coach Jeff Gettler said of the match, "We have a very special group this year, and they did everything they could against a strong, talented Brandeis team. We saw tonight why they are the top team in New England and one of the top teams in the nation, but our Husson team hung tough. The goals came at the worst times for us, but we did a lot of things right and our team, especially our seniors, have so much to be proud of."

Brandeis will move on to play Bowdoin in the second round on Sunday. Husson finishes their season with the team's second trip to the NCAA's in four years and a senior class of Potter, Andy Stevick, Kyle Hargreaves, and Andrew Austin that led the Eagles to a 46-29-6 record over four years.
