Box Score CASTLETON, VT – John Smith (Fayetville, GA) and Logan Steward (Hampden, ME) each rushed for over 100 yards to lead the Husson University football team to a 47-26 win at Castleton on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference play while Castleton goes to 4-3 and 2-2 in league play.
Husson got on the board first when Jeff Turcotte (Lewiston, ME) tackled Castleton's Corey Brimmer for a safety. The play was set up by Ryan Stroud's 38-yard punt that pinned Castleton at their own one-yardline.
The Eagles could not convert on their next drive, but Parker Asselin (Sabbatus, ME) intercepted Castleton quarterback George Busharis's pass on third-and-10, and returned it 37 yards for the touchdown to give Husson a 9-0 lead with seven minutes to go in the first quarter.
Busharis recovered to find Zachary Howe for a 17-yard touchdown reception on the next drive, but Smith completed a 10-play, 73-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles up 16-6 with 12:39 left in the first half.
Busharis found Howe again for another score a minute later to make it 16-13, but Husson quarterback Joe Seccareccia (Bangor, ME) found Josiah Hartley (Bangor, ME) for a 25-yard score to make it 23-13 with 8:19 left.
Steward completed a 7-play, 51-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge with 4:32 left, before Castleton converted a field goal two minutes later to close the gap to 30-16.
However, the Eagles marched 92 yards on seven plays, and Smith capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown. Smith notched 53 yards rushing on the play, including 25 yards on a third-and-10, while Seccareccia found Hartley for a 39-yard reception to set up the score.
Husson went into halftime up 37-16.
Steward would finish off an 8-play, 74-yards drive with a two-yard run after a Castleton field goal with 6:28 left in the third, and Josh Gray (Bucksport, ME) kicked a 22-yard field goal with five minutes left to finish the socring after a Castleton score earlier in the fourth.
Smith finished with 179 yards on 29 carries and two scored while Steward had 120 yards on 17 carries and two scores. Hartley finished with four recpetions for 73 yards and a touchdown to lead the Husson receivers.
Ellis Throckmorton (Bangor, ME) led the Husson defense with a game-high 12 tackles and a sack. Stephan Dance (New London, CT) and Kenny Sweet (Portland, ME) notched interceptions in addition to Asselin's pick-six.
Seccareccia finished 13-24 for 173 yards and a score while Castleton's Busharis went 27-56 for 398 yards and two touchdowns.
Husson outgained Castleton 521 yards to 465.
The Eagles return to the field when they host Anna Maria on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
