Eagles Sweep Double Header; Remain Perfect with Win over Pilgrims

Bangor, ME – The Husson University men's basketball team concluded their double header weekend by defeating the New England College Pilgrims by a final score of 91-65 in a North Atlantic Conference match-up to remain undefeated on the year. With the win, the Eagles improve to 13-0 (7-0 in the NAC) while New England College falls to 6-9 (3-5 in the NAC) on the year.

The Eagles struggled early in the first half offensively, turning the ball over three times in the first three minutes, and found themselves trailing the Pilgrims early before taking the lead with twelve minutes to go up 19-18. Phil Leighton (Naples, Maine) scored the first 8 Husson points, knocking down two 3-pointers in the process and finishing with 10 points headed into the break. Brooks Spaulding (Fairfield, Maine) also had an impressive first half for the Eagles, leading all scorers at the half with 12 points, helping put his team up at the break 51-42.

For the Pilgrims, Dezron Wilson (Hartford, Connecticut) collected 10 points, making both his 3-point attempts and hitting 4-4 free throws to lead New England College.

The Eagles came out of intermission on fire, going on a 25-6 run. Leighton again was instrumental offensively, tacking on 7 more points in the second half. Joining Leighton and Spaulding in the double figure points club were Mike Gonzales (Fort Washington, Maryland) with 14, Aaron Willis (New York, New York) with 12, and Trevon Butler (Waterbury, Connecticut) with 15. Butler also had a strong defensive game, recording 5 steals and 6 rebounds, 5 being defensive rebounds.

For New England College, Robin Wilson (Biddeford, Maine), Jonathan Byrnes (Bethel, Connecticut) had 17 and 15 points respectfully to lead the charge. Wilson did not score in the second half.

Husson shot the ball efficiently, shooting 55% from the field compared to New England College's 40%.

 "We picked up two good conference wins this weekend. We continue to have a lot of different guys contribute to our success," said Head Coach Warren Caruso.

Husson will host Bates on Tuesday the 21st at 7:00 PM, while New England College looks to take on North Atlantic Conference rival Castleton State College Tuesday the 21st at 7:30 PM.
