Husson Field Hockey Wins Second Straight

Box Score

Springfield, MA -  Husson Field Hockey was looking to ride some momentum in their third game of the 2013 season after defeating the University of New England in overtime last Sunday.

They would do exactly that, and pick up their second win of the year by defeating the Plymouth State Panthers 2-0 in the Zenaty Invitational Tournament.

The first half was hotly contested, as the teams played to a 0-0 tie through the first 35 minutes.

Neither team was able to break the seal until four minutes into the second half, when Husson's Britt Mellor (Belfast, ME) set up for a penalty corner.  Mellor passed the ball up top to Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, MA) who was able to put the ball in the back of the cage to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Husson would tack on a second goal seven minutes later, when Mariah Arno (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) dished the ball to Liz Noddin (Skowhegan, ME) who was able to get one past Panthers goalkeeper Jackie Norin to make it 2-0.

That would be all the scoring Husson would need, as Maicee Gustin (Dexter, ME) stopped all six shots she faced for her first shutout of the season.

Husson coach Jen Johnstone was glowing after the game, saying, "We played so well as a team today.  Our defense was strong and showed tremendous poise, our midfield supported the attack, and did extremely well in transition to defense and our attackers were persistent in front of the cage.  Everyone played together and showed such confidence."

Norin was valiant in the loss for the Panthers, as she made 14 saves while allowing both goals to the Eagles.

With the win, Husson improves to 2-1 on the young season.  Plymouth State falls to 0-1 with the loss.

The Eagles will play in the championship of the Zenaty Invitational tomorrow afternoon against Brockport State at 1:15.
