Eagles Top Hornets, Fall To Monks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Standish, ME -  The Husson Women's volleyball team traveled to St. Joseph's College in Standish for a Friday night doubleheader against the Lyndon State College Hornets and the St. Joe's Monks.

Husson would end up splitting the twin bill, taking the first match against Lyndon in four games (25-20, 25-20, 10-25, 25-16), and falling against St. Joe's in the nightcap in straight sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-14).

Eagles' head coach Jodie Fairbank was encouraged by her team's night, saying, "All in all I was really pleased with the girls' performance.  They are beginning to play together like the team I know they can be."

In the first match, the Eagles got some heavy hitting from a duo of freshman to pave the way past Lyndon.  Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, ME) led the team with an impressive 15 kills on 31 attacks while committing just one hitting error, while Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA) put away nine kills of her own.

Husson combined for 13 kills on 31 attacks with just a single error in game one against the Hornets, good enough for a .387 hitting percentage.

The Eagles kept the pedal down and took game two as well, but game three did not go so easily.

The Hornets rallied behind a .333 team hitting percentage, and were able to capitalize on Husson's miscues to steal game three in convincing fashion, 25-10.

Husson righted the ship in game four, as they again collected a high number of kills and thwarted the Lyndon comeback.

Chapman picked up a team-high 25 digs to go with her 15 kills, while Lopes added 19 digs of her own.

Alexandra deHertogh (Cumberland, RI) had a big first match for the Eagles as well, totaling eight kills and 16 digs, while Ryan Hood (Princeton, ME) dished out 27 assists for her second straight impressive performance as setter.

Fairbank was especially proud of her team's work after the Lyndon match, saying, "The girls were really playing well.  Alexandra deHertogh and Lindsay Chapman had some amazing plays in the middle, and Casey Lopes and Kristen Atwood stepped up in the outside position with their hitting."

In the second match against St. Joe's, Husson was taken down by a well-rounded Monks team.

The Eagles did not fare as well on the offensive side in match two, as they managed just 13 kills in three games.  Lopes paced the team with five, while Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, ME) chipped in with three.

Hood led the Eagles with nine assists, and Lopes picked up eight digs.

St. Joe's received outsanding performances from Felicia Wachowiak and Victoria Huntley, who both hit over .500, with 11 and seven kills respectively.  Mariah Hebert also handed out 25 assists for the winners.

Fairbank was not discouraged by the loss, stating, "I will say the second matchup against St. Joe's was a much better game than what the scores say."

With the split, Husson moves to 2-4 on the season.  They will play one more match in Standish this weekend, coming against Bates College on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
